desertrefugee wrote:Absolutely love this build. Glad you're overcoming the need (and thought) of using a fully manual fan activation. I certainly wouldn't recommend that. Too easy to miss the light at a crucial time.

Anyway, why wouldn't you have continued to use the factory fan switch? I don't think it would have been "kludgy" to add it to your custom harness...

...or do you need the fan coming in sooner than the factory setting?
When i bought the bike, the PO had bypassed the fan switch with a toggle, so I assumed it was bad. Rather than replace it I just figured Id use the microsquirt since it has the capability. I bought a bulk pack of relays and connectors when wiring in the ECU so i had an extra laying around.

If i couldnt get it to work that is the way I probably wouldve went though, since like you said the manual switch is not the best solution.

I see.

Well, knowing nothing about the Microsquirt, but a little about electronics, it might be that the control lines off the unit aren't sufficient to push the current the fan needs to run. Did you try using the 'squirt control line to toggle a relay? Maybe that's the ticket. If it'll illuminate an LED, it'll drive a relay...

That's what I'm doing. The issue was that I thought the signal was a switched +pos but it's a switched -neg. Re wired accordingly and as socrace did, worked like a charm. Turned out the led was already powered and needed a switched ground

You are all over this build like white on rice. I'm sure I'm not the only one drooling.

Keep up the good work - and be sure to follow up on this thread with some road warrior shots out on the mean streets.

Great build, drooling... Just one question I didn't see asked yet.

When you changed the neck it looks like you lost the vin completely, how much of an issue is that with DMV? It's a state by state thing with DMV, every one has their own rules, so just wondering.

The number is also stamped on the neck, so even if the plate is missing, the number is still on the next. But not as easy to read

All I did with the steering neck was grind about 1/4" from the bottom. I removed the plate, but like Cyborg said...the vin is stamped on the frame. No issues when I brought it for inspection.

Oh I thought you replaced the whole neck, or it looked like the whole thing had been ground off, not just the sticker. Nevermind.

As long as I'm here.
I was looking at buying those same rear shocks, and wasn't sure if they'd be any good. I'll be interested to hear how they hold up. (I cant buy them now anyway, this bike needs too many other things and it's made me broke beyond broke.)

Do not buy them if you plan on putting miles on the bike. I have the springs cranked all the way down to keep the sag manageable. They're meant for much smaller bikes, the compression isn't bad but the rebound is terrible. Which is expected with the preload set so far. I will probably end up changing them out.

That's a shame, they looked the part and nothing else does in the same price range. What will you replace them with? When I was running the same search it was those, harley shortening shocks, or OEM take off's in that price range and anything high performance looked to be 2-3 times as much.

Actually the harley shortening shocks were even too much money, really I just want to find some commonly available decent oem take off's for cheap, but not enough of them have length listed on ebay ads. Plus most large bike take off's seem to be the same length as these 13-14" things I have now.

just a quick update...

I've been doing some tuning runs. Luckily I live along a highway so I have a good section of road to make multiple straight line pulls. I've got it tuned pretty well up to about 6300rpm. Working on the top end of the map, right now it goes super rich so each run I increase by about 500-750 rpm...still trying to find a place that will let me use their dyno, the local Harley dealer said no because they have to plug into the factory ECU.

I broke my tuning cable tonight so it'll be a couple of days before I make anymore progress, but it runs well enough to cruise around and have some fun.

First couple of runs I was around 3psi, I turned it up to 5psi and its handling it pretty well...no knock with 93 octane and factory spark advance specs of 38.5 at 3000 rpm. Intake temps are around 100F with ambient around 80...I'd like to get to 7, maybe 10psi...but we'll see...it's plenty quick enough as is so...

anyway not much new in the way of pics...I did paint the seat so it doesn't look so incomplete. Not sure if black will be the final color, but atleast now it all matches.
photo1.jpg
And here is a picture/video of the fan...a little unorthodox given that it is a computer fan, so yet to be seen how it will handle the temps...but it fit perfect and moves a ton of air...I think the specs are 255cfm at around 4amps. I know a few people that have had good results with similar fans...I haven't gotten it hot enough to turn on yet, the new aluminum radiator does a really good job keeping things cool.

also trying a different video linking/embedding method, let me know if it works ok.

I appreciate the offer, but my laptop doesnt have a serial port, so the cable im using is a straight usb to microsquirt cable. No adapter needed. The place i ordered the microsquirt from included it, and a replacement was $25...not terrible, ill reinforce it with heatshrink this time so it doesnt bend right at the connection.
