Not gonna let a 40+year wing get the best of me! 3 hours later..found a bad diode for the h-lamp causing the bike's starter to run when the key was turned on...Once sorted, and a new diode installed, all the electrics are working and sorted out. 898 bit my a** tonight,BUT I bit back... Adjusted the clutch, and took it around the block under its own power for the first time in 15+years! First impressions..Very smooth, handles nice, goes through the gears nicely...Very quiet,No knocks, snicks into gear nicely, plenty of power, and I am sure with more miles will be just as smooth.Just a few more minor issues, and 898 will be ready!

It was actually the diode for the starter circuit that was bad. With the key on,I had 12v on the yellow/red solenoid wire, and with it being connected to the solenoid caused the starter to spin every time the key was turned to on. Only 3 items on that circuit..Start button, solenoid, and a diode. Both the start switch, and the solenoid were disconnected when I had power on that circuit..Unplug diode, and power went away. I have lots of these around,so I substuted one from my parts bin,and we are good to go!

OK that makes more sense. The ballast resister bypass diode. I can see if the diode was shorted, 12v would feed back to the starter solenoid.

Diodes at 40 years do seem to suffer just like RLU's, so I guess we should all start checking them sooner. Sure wish I could make Cleveland this weekend. Always more energy to finish a bike that runs so well. Great team effort.

She's DONE! She starts easy, idles great and is a smooth runner! After 16 years of sleep she has awakened beautifully! When I got to Al's, Greg and Al were working on the cooling system. Off with the carbs, wiggle the thermostat housing, insert the new O-ring and presto! Turns out it was a pinched O-ring.

Al had most of the other stuff done before we got there. When we fired her up, we found another leak. This time it was at a hose connection. The OEM clamp was tight but just would not get the job done. Plumbers clamp to the rescue and presto, no leak! All the other seals and connections seem to be fine. Here is 898 in her present glory. I will be posting an ebay auction today and listing it on Craigslist. If we still have her by the 18th, she will be at VMD. It has been a great project and I am glad to have helped save 898!

Are you going to attach all the hoses? I see one that isn't there. I'll wait to see if you catch before I spill the beans. ;) :flamer
