I've heard of the a timing belt slipping a tooth or two and causing a knock. Not sure it would be that loud but might be worth investigating. If that's not it I'd be looking for another engine.

Ohhhh, :(

I've been a mechanic for 32 years and that sound is commonly referred to as "the death rattle". That's a rod bearing- without question. The bare minimum that you would be looking at would be a new/good used crankshaft, new bearings and possibly one connecting rod. If you intent to rebuild the existing engine you should also replace the oil pump and have all of the oil galleries cleaned and the case dipped in a hot tank to remove every trace of dirt and contamination. So the question is, do you really want to tackle splitting the case?

Let's face it- if you want to get riding while the seasons on us, find a good used engine and slam 'er in. You can use your old engine as a good parts source. I'm with Sagebrush on this one.

WF could have that engine out in two hours, actually I'd go another engine, I just can't rebuild one of these as cheap as I can buy one.
If I could get a whole bike with, what was it? 12,000 miles? on it for $500 how can I beat that. Out of five bikes (GWs) I paid $500 for four of them.

Well, I should have updated this over a year ago, but I'm slipping.

I made the decision to let the 1100 go instead of finding a new engine. A guy that I've dealt with before from another forum made me a deal that I couldn't refuse. He took the 1100 with a blown engine and a small 250 suzuki as an even trade on an 84 1200 interstate. I have since repainted the 1200 due to a multi color paint job when I got it, and am now on the hunt for a battery cover since I lost one.
