That's interesting, Greg. I don't think the explosion would be too big from what I have read, but if you somehow had it contained where it accumulate and collect, you could get a boom. Hydrogen makes such a fast explosion. Most of the hydrogen is so light that it up and gone before it has a chance to combust.
Tom, thanks for the info on the charger. That's the same as I have and I didn't think it would be enough to make it work, but it looks like it does the trick.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Greg, I agree that in retrospect I should not have had the contraption in the basement. You are exactly right about moving the negative cable around. That is the only way that you can derust all of the "corners". I'm still getting some rust after 2 days, so I'll just keep going. Time is my friend here.

I did more dis-assembly yesterday morning and today. The motor is out and everything has been removed from the frame. This morning I cleaned and wire brushed parts. Lots of degreasing going on. (not my favorite part) I also took apart the front forks.
Image
I remember my frustration when I did that on the 77. Getting those seals out took me forever then and about 5 minutes today. Looks like the forks are ok, though one was really nasty inside. I got my Randakk kit and dvd yesterday and listened to about the first hour and a half today. I am going to think about and research that project a bunch while I finish the less cerebral tasks. While cleaning, I took a good look at my handlebars. I was wondering if these grips were stock on a 76. Every other 76 I have seen has had them on as best I can recall. If they are not stock, what did stock look like? Let me know. Ernie

A good day spent cleaning parts. I finished watching the Randakk video and decided to start on the carbs. I degreased them with engine cleaner and was real happy how they looked. I then hit them with some brake cleaner. Here are the results.
Image
Then I set up the dungeon for the rebuild. I decided to do it just like randakk.
Image
On my left I have a small tv with the basketball games on. On the other work bench, I have Randakk on dvd helping me with the carbs.
Image
Sunday afternoon, no one bothering me, motorcycle parts all around and three remotes! Does it get any better than this?
Image
have been dreading this, but I'm actually enjoying this. I proceed to start dis-assembling. I can tell by the bolts holding on the fuel bowls that someone has had the carbs open. (they used different bolts) I also noticed that two of the bowls were on the wrong carbs. All was going well until I removed the floats. Here is what I found on one of the carbs.
Image
Notice that one of the posts holding the float is missing. It was broken off, but not in the carb. Someone must have broken it and then put it back that way. Ok, so now I NEED YOUR HELP! What do I do? I have an extra set of carbs, but they are for a 77. Should I look for a complete set of 76 carbs? Can/should I use the 77 carbs? Let me know what you think. Thanks, Ernie

Those are not the stock grips. I put the same ones on my LTD. The stockers are much less comfortable. I think Randakk has a set of repro grips on his site and occasionally a set of stockers comes up on ebay. Sorry don't have a pic.

Think Randakk has a fix for the float pin post and know it has been discussed here a few times.

I'm sure someone with more info will chime in shortly.
Good luck with the project. Looks like it's coming along quickly.

I am still trying to figure out what to do about the carb situation. I saw on ebay that a guy has the 4 carb bodies from a 76 for sale. The cost with shipping is about $40. The cost of the Randakk repair is is about the same. So, should I get the carb bodies and switch one (that means taking the pairs apart which the dvd suggests not doing) or repair the float post on the existing carb? I have decided to stay with the 76 carbs on this bike. Let me know what you think.

My decision just got somewhat easier. I just got an email from Randall and he does not have a post repair kit for the 76 carb. So now my options are: 1. buy the carb bodies 2. buy 76 carbs somewhere or 3. use the 77 carbs. I am wondering how difficult it is to replace one of the carb bodies. Randakk stresses keeping them together. What do you all think?

Yep those are not stock grips. The stockers were smaller in circumference, ribbed and pretty uncomfortable. I remember very vividly, cutting off the stockers and going with the larger, softer aftermarket grips.

I'm not a GL1000 carb guy but I'd get that set off ebay and combine it with what you have to come up with a stock set of '76 carbs.

Sorry for my absence ... this whole thread slipped by me. I am caught up now though. :-)

Glad to have you aboard Roady! I have the carbs apart and the number one carb stripped to the body.

I stripped the two brass screws holding one of the butterflys on, but got them off with the easy out. I'll need to figure out their size and find some replacements. The auction on the bodies ends tonight. Hopefully no one goes crazy and I get them. I have been cleaning parts like crazy these last few days. I am waiting for parts on the gauges, front forks, carbs and brake system. Cleaning everything really pays off in the end, but it is not my favorite part!

Got the carb bodies off ebay last night. They were $39 shipped. I bought some replacement screws for the butterfly at the local hardware. Stainless metric Ouch!!!! (but probably still less than the local honda shop)
