IMHO, if you don't send it back you will always not like the one you have. You didn't get what you ordered so I would talk to them about it.

It is a nice seat, but a cafe seat it is not. If you want a cafe seat, and I would, then work with them to get one. Nothing wrong with a darkwing seat, but that is not what you ordered and a darkwing seat is more common at shows.

Re: '77 GL1000 "semi-cafe" project
Like I said, I like the seat, just not what I ordered.
I'll see what they have to say about it, but I'll probably give it a day or two to see if it grows on me...
I have always loved this bike...

Somewhere a guy opened his darkwing box and found a bumstopper cafe seat instead!
Give them a call, simple screw-up and should be easy to rectify...

Well, for what it's worth the only person I know in my area with an aftermarket seat, has the one I ordered... Not the darkwing...Fred Camper wrote:a darkwing seat is more common at shows.

Noooooo. Sucks you got the wrong one. The darkwing is cool, but it's not the bumstop cafe seat you wanted. If it was me, I'd see about getting it switched for the right one. Gotta make the bike match that picture in your head, right?

I'm a good 200 miles south of you, though. The only place you could call that close is here in Texas.

I think I gave up on the "picture in my head" awhile back. I'm just gonna keep throwing stuff at it until I like it.reidransom wrote:Noooooo. Sucks you got the wrong one. Yup.I'm a good 200 miles south of you, though. The only place you could call that close is here in Texas.

I think I'll keep it. It wasn't expensive, so if I decide I hate it later I can change it then. I'd like to give it a try though.

Also, this seat will make mounting a tail light much easier.

Re: '77 GL1000 "semi-cafe" project
Since I want to move the tail light up under the darkwing seat, I made a tail light bracket out of an old Datsun bumper filler. Nice to have at least one Datsun part on the bike...
Haven't drilled the holes for the light yet. Need to see if the stock light will fit between the frame rails or whether I need a smaller light...

My front seat bracket has been missing since I got the bike. Found one on a parts bike I bought today so I cleaned it up a bit and painted it.
Don't know for sure if the darkwing seat needs it, but if it does...
Parts bike also had a complete breather on it, so my shop mate suggested making the inlet hole a little bigger for better airflow. I think he got carried away...

Re: '77 GL1000 "semi-cafe" project
Put another fuel pump on today that I got from CyclePsycho...
Bike fired up (eventually, we'll get to that in a bit), and ran fairly well with no leaks. But...
I think one of the carbs on the left bank has taken a crap on me. It's dumping fuel. And lots of it. Thus making it hard to start, not wanting to idle, and making it stall any time you let off the throttle for even a second.
Guess I'll have to get them rebuilt a bit sooner than I thought...
Oh well, I guess I can get the paint work and timing belts done while the carbs are being rebuilt...
Anyone know a good place to get them rebuilt?

CV carbs generally do not work well with alterations to the airbox or plenum. It may work great, but if your having trouble getting it to run good, put the stock airbox back on and see how she does.datsunfreak wrote:Parts bike also had a complete breather on it, so my shop mate suggested making the inlet hole a little bigger for better airflow. Re: '77 GL1000 "semi-cafe" project
Oh, I never put this on the bike. The problems have been building slowly over the last month. I initially chalked it up to the bad fuel pump (too low a pressure/volume maybe?), but a fresh working pump made zero difference.Dangeruss wrote:CV carbs generally do not work well with alterations to the airbox or plenum. Here is Pistol Petes webpage... http://www.oldwings.com/
If I were to pay anybody to rebuild carbs, this guy would be at the top of the list.
I know we talked about Randakks websight earlier, but be sure to spend a couple hours reading there first. TONS of great info and I always seem to find something new.
