I grabbed it with pliers and just gorilla'd it out. Do that as a last resort though. You can get new pistons, thats why I wasn't too worried about doing it.

ROTFLMAO Gorilla'd? We all have to that from time to time :happy_251:

I've worked on some stuff that some gorilla put back together. That is no fun. At least on mine it went back with good parts. ;)

Have I mentioned that I have been cleaning? and cleaning and cleaning? I was working on the brake system last nite. I took a propane torch to the piston and after a minute or so it loosened up enough for me to get it out. Lots of gunk in those bad boys! I think I will be able to use all the pistons. I was going to buy rebuild kits, but they want $50 each! The only part I really need is the seal and Honda has those for $5 each. Ten bucks for each piston instead of fifty! Most of the little parts have been cleaned and put back in the baggies for now. I am almost to the point where I am finished with the de-greasing and can move on to the wire wheel and paint or polishing. I still have not touched the engine so it is still a mess. Things are going to slow down now. We are supposed to have some great weather for the next week (so my wife and I will be riding) and in two weeks I will in Wyoming on a hunting trip. I have been ordering a bunch of parts these days and they are starting to arrive. Christmas in October!

I didn't know you could still order from Honda the inner piston brake caliper seals. That is good information to know. It is a waste to buy on the rubber brake parts when the only item you need is that inner o-ring. Thanks for sharring.

I had hoped to get some work done on the bike last weekend, but back spasms put me down for the count. I was in my basement and bent down to pick a part off the floor and BAM. It felt like two electrical jolts running up my back. Anyway, feeling almost human today. In the meantime, I have accomplished some things.

A friend of mine is pretty handy with a welder and grinding wheel. I dropped off the muffler and headers to see what he could do to fix them. He used just two pieces of stock muffler pipe. Welded them on the muffler, cut small v's out of the header end, ground them down so they would be more flexible and Presto, like new mufflers.

I also worked on cleaning the brake system. This time I had no trouble finding the mysterious "tiny hole" in the master cylinders. In part that was thanks to my new brake rebuild tool.
Image
Yes they may look like short pieces of wire, but do not be fooled. (Patent pending) By the way, the strands in 14 gauge wire are too large for the hole as is two 18 gauge strands twisted together.

About a week ago I posted a wanted wish list on the site. Thanks to Al (Dog Boy) and Walt (motowalt) I have the needed LTD emblem and all of the LTD tools except for the file. This site is unbelievable! Thanks Guys!!! I had hoped to buy a 77 seat off ebay which was in great condition. I just could not pull the trigger at $280.00!!!!! I will keep searching for it and a left LTD side cover. They are out there to be found, I just know it.

In the mail today I got my title from the PO. Thanks Barb!

Here is my stash of new and used parts, and others waiting at the Dreaded Wire Wheel station.

And my first part cleaned at the wheel.

More when I actually accomplish something.

It was a good day today. I got the title registered in my name and I received the LTD side emblem and missing tools from the set. I still need the left side panel and seat. If anyone out there has a nice 77 seat , I have a very nice 78/79 seat to trade. I have been working on the brake system. I have the calipers and MC's cleaned and ready for their rebuild. I am still waiting for some of the parts. I was wondering what the red dots on the parts signify. Does anyone know? Thanks

As noted earlier, I have basically been cleaning and using the wire wheel. Visibly, about the only progress is moving parts from the "to-do" box to the "ready to polish" box.
Image
Image
I worked a bit on the starter solenoid. One of the POs had done some rewiring to add a modern 30 amp fuse. In doing so they eliminated one of the plastic connectors. I put in a new 30 amp fuse holder and rewired and soldered everything in. The original dog bone fuse was in good shape, so I will keep it in place, but it will not be in use.
Image
I forgot to take an "after" picture. I really wanted to SEE some progress, and I had some of the smaller add-on parts ready for paint, so yesterday I painted some of the parts. I put some of them back together and here are some PROGRESS pictures:

Tomorrow, I leave on a Wyoming hunting trip, so this will be my last post/work for awhile. See you in November.

I got back from vacation last night. A great hunting trip in Wyoming in search of a bull elk. I am so envious of the folks lucky enough to live in or near the Rockies. (To be accurate I was in the Wind River Mountains) I thought I would attach a picture of me and a friend in search mode. A great hunt, but this time the big bull won. I will be back in September however.

For those of you thinking that I forgot about my project while hunting, WRONG! While gone I received parts for the project from hondapartsline including mostly washers, gaskets and brake rebuild parts.
Image

I needed new rubber grommets for the fan and was going to order them from mother Honda as they were available. At the price of 6.56 each for those tiny grommets, I just could not pull the trigger. Local hardware had the same thing at 28 cents each. Here is the finished product.

Oh, and by the way, I found the LTD Holy Grail! I now have a matched set of side covers!!!!!!

More progress to come soon.
