Thanks guys.

Neil, I can't wait to assemble the engine and get in the frame, but the holidays will slow things up a bit.

Was able to remove the shock bushings and axle bushings from the swingarm. Originally, was going to leave them in place & paint the swingarm. Took it over to Brent (powder coat) yesterday morning and he had it done that afternoon :-D

Tool Box(s), battery acid did its thing on the original (see next pic). Was lucky to find a good used one. Both were powder coated. I'll sell the original.

Great job on the restoration. It's going to look like a new bike!
I had the smaller CB125 many years ago, wish I would have kept it.
Thanks for all the pictures.
Great to keep these old 'Wings flying on down the road.

Many of us want a bike just like that. Great effort and great start point too.

Thanks

more progress... kinda

Starter worked, but seemed to bind up, had a noise when you let off the switch. Bench tested it, and it had the same noise with no load.

Here it is disassembled
Image

Detail of brushes & armature
Image

Plenty of brush material & grease. Service limit on the brushes is 0.197", There's more than twice that, so I'll keep them.
Image

Here's the planetary gear set that gets the torque out of the motor. Everything comes apart, even the outer ring gear. There's a gasket on each side. O-ring seals where the starter mates with the engine.
Image

The noise was due to lack of lubrication. The armature rides on sleeve bushings versus bearings. Seems like over the years the grease dried out, and the armature couldn't turn as easily. After reassembly I benched tested it. The amp draw & voltage drop was significantly less and no noise.
-------------------------------

Rear shocks looked okay, but had some pitting on the chrome. Found some aftermarket ones that will work nicely.
Image

New shocks with new labels (Reproduction Decals in Canada)
Image
--------------------------------

Next up is painting the cases. I have a little dilemma in that the two main engine cases were not factory painted. I'm probably going to impose a bit of "artistic liberty" in painting them.

Weather forecast is looking good today, so will continue to prep the engine and hopefully paint this afternoon. Then if all goes well; heat cycle them in the oven before heading out for Thanksgiving dinner with the kids tomorrow.
--------------------------------

Tid-bit of info... this is the bike that showed me how important maintenance is. You see, I was the kind that put gas in it, turned the key & off I went. Until the day I was riding and the rear wheel locked up. Wouldn't start or turn over. Ended up the lack of changing the oil & cleaning the filter blocked the oil passage to the camshaft and it seized. The bike sat for months until my dad found a senior at school that did bike repairs. I'd like to tell you I helped, but in reality; I was glued to his every move, asking questions - testing his patience. He was a hero and I was riding once again, never to forget the lessons learned.

Shocks look great, nice find. I agree on painting the case as you want to keep the maintance reasonable and the bike may not be a daily driver.

Fantastic work ray,

I would love a 175, I was just reading that they could do a 16.5 quarter mile and 80 mph,
Not bad for any bike when you think about it.

She's gonna be as good as new.

Parts making their way into the oven... started on "Warm", then 200degF, then 250. Takes about an hour/batch.

Awesome work you're doing. That bike brings back a lot of fond memories. I had a 1969 or 1970 CL175(?) on Okinawa in 1970. It had the upswept exhaust. I rode the heck out of that bike. It would come real close to the 80 mph. There wasn't a road north of Camp Hansen it didn't travel at least once. The pic below is what mine looked like.

I must say the high exhaust is very nice, I prefer that look as it is now a unique look among street bikes.

Thanks

lcallison, the CL175 is unique, and Fred is right; the exhaust sets it apart. Very nice... maybe a future bike/project for you?

Engine finally going back together.

Shifter drum in position, along with the shifter forks

Shifter mechanism

Crankshaft dowel pins installed. There's 6 pins total, (4 longer ones for the crank, 2 shorter ones for the gear clusters)
Image

Image

Image

Gear clusters have bearing retainer rings (2 total)
Image

Kick Starter shaft installed. Red on shaft is assembly lube.
Image

Crankshaft & Gear Clusters joined the kick starter
Image

Made sure the seals were in place
Image

Thought it would be a good idea to get the timing chain in before the lower case was installed
Image

Installed the windage trays, shift rod seal and cleaned the sealing surface one more time.
Image

Image

Made an outline of the case & noted bolt size & location - makes it easier on me.
Image

Lower case in place, along with positive battery cable (starter).

Hope to get on the cylinder head tomorrow or sometime this weekend
