Had some time tonight to play with the bike. I got the seat wire-brushed and prepped for paint. Then I put a coat of paint on it and the two pieces of plastic that I am keeping on the bike.
Image
Image

Then I decided to work on the engine a bit. Had all the parts to put the right side cover back on, so I did.
Image
Image

Then I set the tappets and points. As with most of the parts on this bike, I had to customize the points a bit. I could not get the gap small enough, so filed the adjusting holes accordingly. Think I got it.
Image

Pressure is on to get this bike done before the 898 trains rolls in to Columbus from St. Louis! Should not be a problem. I ordered what I hope is the last set of parts from Honda today.
Hope for the best, expect the worst and take what comes!

I got a lot accomplished on the scooter this week. Front fender, horn and foot pegs back in place.

At this point I'm not planning on putting the plastic cover back over the frame. I'm also not planning on using the bulky plastic air cleaner. When I removed the nut from the ignition switch, I broke it. Turns out it is the same size as the steering neck. I had an extra one and it worked fine.
Image

Front brake installed.
Image

Put the left side of the engine back together.

Back in its riteful place.

Last look before the rear tire is replaced. You can see the weld repairs at the bottom.
Image

I also hooked up the brake contraption before putting the wheel on. I think it was designed by a guy named . . . Goldberg!
Image

More Tomorrow. My wife is in Colorado with our daughter this weekend, so lots of time to work on the bike.
Hope for the best, expect the worst and take what comes!

Just ordered a bunch of 3.5 mm bullet connectors. Honda no longer makes the harness, so I guess I'll be making my own. (or at least a major part of one)

Thanks Steve. Having fun! I decided to work on the fuel lines. I bought some metric fuel line. The original system had only a small screen in the carb as a filter, so I decided to add in-line fuel filters.
Image
Image

I put the carb on just for fitting. It was then that I looked at it closely for the first time. The reserve fuel inlet was pointed downward instead of sideways. I was going to turn it, but it appears that a PO put them in there with JB weld. I guess it will have to do.

I am now kind of at a standstill. I need to redo the wiring harness and the parts are on order. I also need to get the carb rebuilt. I ordered those parts about a month ago. No word last week, so I emailed them. Just asked when I might expect them. Few days later got a nasty-gram. What is with some of these businesses? I will not order another part from these people. I guess I really don't need them now. Weather is too bad to ride and the 898 has not yet arrived for the next project, so here is how she sit.

More work on the scooter this morning. I neede a guide for the rear brake line since I do not plan on putting the frame cover back on. Had some stock aluminum so I made one. After a couple of tries it worked out fine.

Then I recovered the seat. I added some new foam and put the seat cover on.

Then I got the muffler guards refitted to the muffler.

As she sits now.

Here is a weekend update. I have two major things yet to accomplish on the bike: carbs and wiring. I got the necessary parts Friday, so I decided to tackle. First thing was a bad wire on the rectifier, so I replaced that.
Image

Then I worked on the main harness. This bike does not have winkers, so I decided to clean up the harness and remove the 3 wires for them. Then I splice/repaired/replaced as necessary.
Image

Then into their rightful place.
Image
Image

Made my own tool kit for my daughter (SiL): metric end wrenches, small crescent wrench and phillips screwdriver.
Image
Image

Worked on the carb and got it rebuilt. Also note the compact air filter that I bought to rplace the Rub Goldberg deal that Honda designed.
Image
Image
Image
Image

Then I had to install the sliding top in the carb. I already had the handelbar end connected, greased, working, etc, when I realized that the carb end needs to be installed first. No problem, so I took apart the throttle assembly to loosen the cable. I had to open up the sliding clip just a bit to get the cable out. That is when I decide to turn that piece into a 2 part slider. AAAARRRRGGGGG! I think they are still available from the Mother ship.
Image
Image

Then I was looking at the bike to see if I did want to replace the center cover. It is broken but will still mount up ok if I want to put it back on. I was thinking of painting it black if I put it on. I guess it does kind of finish it off and cover the harness/cables. What you guys think? Some pics with and without:
Image
Image
Image
Image

Oh yea, the bad news: I realized that the foot peg mounting bar and shifter are bent. I think my buddy can heat them and straighten, I hope! A PO must have laid it down on that side. You can see some scars on the rotor cover on the left side. Getting Close!
Hope for the best, expect the worst and take what comes!

Put the center cover on. It will save wear and tear on the top tube where people's feet will drag over it. And it just looks better. IMO

You may have to "tune" the carb just a little with that Pod filter on there. Not nearly as much of a pain as with CV carbs but it may still need some tweaking.
