Re: St1100
I'm thinking of selling my 2010 Vulcan Nomad to get a sport tourer instead. The Nomad is a pretty bike, but the 1700cc motor has to work to move the 850+ lb bike. It also handles like a cinder block on wheels - terrible. So far I've ridden a Kawi Concourse and Yamaha FJR. Both are awesome, powerful, great handling bikes. I'd like to try an ST1300 and when I decide which bike I like best, I'd want to take the GF out for a ride to make sure she's comfortable. They're out there used for good prices and usually in top condition since the owners are more "mature" and take care of their rides.

You might look into the BMW r1200rt as well. Big advantage here is weight, only 500lbs, and they have available cruise control. Many of the used 1200rts I've seen have the factory cruise on them.

Re: St1100
Just curious but I've heard stories that one of the complaints about the ST1300 is that the rider has to deal with a lot of engine heat on their right leg compared to an ST1100 in fact I heard one story where the owner quickly sold the 1300 and bought an 1100 instead because of it. Being you have both can you verify the heat issue? The only reason I ask is because I too am interested in a ST1100 or possibly a 1300.detdrbuzzard wrote:whith everything installed on the mighty ST 1300 other than the J&M cb I'm ready to start working on my ST 1100, here is a pic of both back when I still had a trunk on the mighty ST 1300

Re: St1100
ST-1300's (at least my 04) ARE HOT, especially if you are like me and knee-hug the tank. Spreading your legs will help get cooler air on your thighs.
I mitigated the heat on my WV twisties trip by wearing riding pants (mine have a waterproof inner lining that breathes) with no pants underneath.
I was initially looking for an ST-1100 but settled on the more modern (FI) ST-1300 because of "carbs". I somewhat regret the choice I made but (mixed message alert) I do LOVE the ST-1300.
It's been my daily driver for the past couple of weeks since the Valkyrie is apart for front tire, brake pads and fork seals (and I moved the 93 up to PA for chauffeuring the wife again). For 130/miles/day DD duty, I really haven't noticed the heat except for at stop lights, stop and go traffic and really hot afternoon rides home.
If you're one of those guys that rides in jeans or (gasp) short pants, the ST-1300 may not be the best choice UNLESS you find one with the OEM fairing air deflectors installed. These are no longer available to buy, ANYWHERE new. I'm toying with adding "something home-made" in plexiglass to divert the worst of it away from my thighs. I'll regret having that installed in the winter though.

Re: St1100
Thanks for the input. While going through Tennessee back in July I met an ST1100 owner and he's the one that told me about the heat issue of the ST1300. I guess a friend of his had an 1100 then sold it to get the more modern 1300 then shortly afterwards went looking for another 1100 due to the heat issue.

The ST1100 throws more heat at your legs/ankles than the 'Wing does but not enough to worry about ....

Re: St1100 "the Donkey"
Fancy finding a thread on STs on the Wingdom! Ha ha, I've been using this '91 for all weather, all season work commutes since scoring it back in November. I'd have to agree with lots of the comments here too, it is quite simply one of the most underrated bikes ever. Nothing bothers it, goes like a rocket and is a lot of fun to boot.
It was very unloved by an old work colleague and he pushed it to me to bring back to life. New wheel bearings, fork seals, a mirror and tires later, and the only thing with it is a very noisy clutch rattle at idle. That was 5,000 miles ago and it hasn't worsened.
It does have a very noisy aftermarket screen, currently off due to the Texas summer temps, and an odd Corbin in need of some rework. It's also been lowered by the PO with a shorter shock, which doesn't bother me except for slight problems with the kick stand being a tad too long, (it's fallen over on slightly uneven ground!).
Lowering it also makes it an absolute sod to pull up onto the centre stand, it is one heavy sucker. Did you know a full face helmet will stow perefectly in the bags?
I looked at a Super Tenere this morning as a possible successor to this one but the truth is I just can't bring myself to get rid of it! It's that good.
Cheers
Dean

Re: St1100
So I took my st1100 out last weekend for a long day ride, the first long ride since installing my new clearview windshield, west to gateway Colorado, north along the Delores river to Norwood to Ridgway and home, about 270 miles, and 5 hrs, if any of you are in western Colorado this is a must drive, desert red stone canyons with twisty roads and little traffic and views of 14 thousand ft mountains, the st got 60 mpg averaging 55mph, the photo was taken at a oasis north of gateway with a natural spring coming right out of the red stone cliff

Re: St1100
Mine came with a tall, aftermarket, 'shield and while I still looked over it OK I sought out an OEM shield to try. It does make the quiet spot smaller alright but it looks way better to my eye (as if I've ever worried about what a bike looked like) .... I'm off to the ST Owners Meet in White Lake Ontario (up by Ottawa) this week and I'll try the OEM 'shield on the road and report back ....

Re: St1100
the mufflers on my ST 1100 are two brothers slip on's.
the mighty ST 1300 is hot, I only hug the tank when I have to, I also keep my feet away from the frame. I've had it for almost two years and 25,000 miles now
