Back wheel, final drive, both shocks, and I think the master cylinder is what I took off on the last one I pulled. It is a tight fit. Once you are ready a good pop with a rubber mallet is usually needed to get it started. Then get on the floor behind the bike and wiggle it out like you are taking delivery of a baby.

Re: What Did You Do To Your Wing Today?
Battery box has already gone. It died and went to the scrap yard. Just trying to get the harness out as complete as possible and the gas tank is a bit in the way. And it has gas in it, must be 15 years old total surprised. I think I will be working on the rear end then next. Just out of interest, has any fitted air shock to the GL1000, as I have a gammy leg I was moving in the direction of a semi bobber, just wondering if I could lower and raise a bit with them. So off to be now as it is 01:08 and I need my beauty sleep. Thanks again for the info.

Re: What Did You Do To Your Wing Today?
Today I put on my single carb manifold (the old "H" style that Juan sold in 2011) and the new EMPI carb. Someday I may have the originals rebuilt, but I don't have the money right now, and I've had these parts for years. (I bought them for less than half the cost of a Pistol Pete rebuild.)
I've got the battery on a slow charge to see if by some miracle it will still work.
I also put in the new-to-me tach cable.
There are a few wiring bugs to sort out, exhaust, tires, fork seals, oil and new belts. Then I hope she'll be ready to start again.
I let this bike intimidate me for too long, but thanks to you guys here, I've been able to see how simple they can be.

Yes they are simple when you think about them as one system at a time. If you think about the entire machine it can be overwhelming until you have done a couple.

Yeah, they're definitely not a thumper, or Iron Head Sportster, but I saw some reports where folks have torn down 1500s and 1800s.Whiskerfish wrote:Dirt Road Cowboy wrote:SNIP

Re: What Did You Do To Your Wing Today?
Ian, there used to be a video from onecrazymofo (where'd he go) . He made it look so easy, 30 seconds tops after all is removed. He used a lever in the front rapped in a cloth. You just give it a good pry against the top crossmember which has a rectangular rubber bushing and the tank, right above the carb bell crank. Once it gets started, it's like Whisker said, except you grab that baby by the head and pull while lifting up and down. No midwife needed.

Re: What Did You Do To Your Wing Today?
I love all these comments. I see my self at the rear of the bike, wheel off with the two shock holders on each side (you can see where this is going) and there I stand , legs apart to gain a good balance, hands forwards, waiting for the ball
that got ya, just like the receiver waiting for the BALL......
I think the problem with me is age, 64 this year but my heart says 18, my body says 73 and my memory is 84.
But no matter what I will keep on
and I will keep on
.
As you look at the bike from either side, it seam logical that the tank should come out forwards, there is room, only one problem engine is in the way, which is why I thought the engine had to come out first. It just never occurred to me that it would go in from the back.
I want the engine out this week end, so I can get the rest done. But right now there are so many nuts and bolts and screws that are seized in with rust, that I need the weight of the engine to provide something to push against.

Sat on it. Fired it up. Checked the lights and once over. Backed it out of the garage. Couldn't pick the right leg up quick enough to be comfortable riding yet. Grrrrr, eighty degrees and lots of free time, but I can't ride yet. A couple more weeks I hope. Hope you're all out enjoying it.

Got this one closer yet. Fired it for the first time in I don't know how many years. It's been through a few owner's I think before it got to me.

Re: What Did You Do To Your Wing Today?
Spent yesterday building new cables for my garage doors. Last set was galvanized and only lasted 3-4 years before rotting out on the bottom. I ordered some bulk T-304 Stainless wire rope and made a bunch of cables up and started replacing mine yesterday and finished that up this morning. Then I started on the 77 I got a couple weeks ago. She fired for the first time today. Used the carbs off my 75. Cranked for about 3 seconds then ran right up. Lot of smoke and some burping at the beginning but that is to be expected. So far she runs really good. Gonna give it a few more runs and really check things out then pickle the engine and start dismantling her.

Re: What Did You Do To Your Wing Today?
I can't really answer that. ANC Motorcycles have been Honda main dealers and now independent specialists since I was in short trousers. Rather than try to fix the carb assembly myself, I gave it to the specialists especially after two Honda main dealers declined the bike because of it's age. I had already replaced six or seven helicoils but they replaced even more as more stripped threads turned up. As for things being chewed up. I presume they fixed them up as best as they could but it just wasn't enough. They are buying a second set of carbs for £100 and will swop all the new bits from my old carbs over. Their years of experience and knowledge far far exceeds mine so it's bite the bullet time. I will ask to see the old carbs just to satisfy my curiosity though. I just don't want the bike to be another of those 'projects in progress' bikes and want to see her back on the road in weeks rather than months.Track T 2411 wrote:I agree with Robin. I'm always a bit skeptical of 'shops' unless I've received good recommendations from people I trust. Are you supposed to find another set of carbs, or is the shop? I know po's can really mess up stuff, but it just makes me wonder...Paul Narramore wrote:Latest news on my 1977 GL1000 which is having it's carb assembly taken apart and refurbished. After a month's wait for parts to arrive from Japan, I got a phone call this morning from ANC Motorcycle in Maidstone to say that after careful reassembly, the carbs won't run right and that lots of internal damage was found. I butcher has been at work on the carbs. Andy recommends a decent secondhand set of carbs and all of the new stuff added to my set swopped over. More money but hey ho.....

Re: What Did You Do To Your Wing Today?
That is typical of a lot of so called MAIN dealers. Our bikes are older than the MD in most of them and a GL1000 that belongs in a museum. it is the same with my cars, if it doesn't have a diagnostics plug, then they are just plain stupid. I would rather read a book ten times over and watch a hundred U tube vids and do it my self. Lets face it most people are scared when it comes to doing anything on a bike, why, lack of knowledge. But would Gottlieb Daimler not recognise a modern engine cause he would, a 4 stroke is a 4 stroke, doesn't matter how many cylinders it has. An ignition system is simple, load a capacitor with a few thousand volts and fire it down a wire at the right moment. fuel system like wise, don't look at it as 4 carbs, it isn't it is 4 individual carburettors that function together.
Electronic ignition is in theory dead simple, even more so than the old points method. Number 1 cylinder at top dead centre on the power stroke, number 2 cylinder is also at TDC but the beginning of the induction stroke.
For static ignition you have done the job. Carbs are the same, nothing voodoo about them. Get a good manual and read it through a couple of times, buy a full 4 carb kit and do it.

Changed oil and added one of those spiffy chromed dipsticks. No more standing on my head checking oil.
