Re: Another GL1000 build..."Therapy"
Excellent tips!
I used some JB Weld and some sheet metal and patched it up. Luckily the area in question is easily accessible when the tank is on the bike as it is right next to the battery cage.
Funny about mentioning to seal the tank on the outside. I had purchased a small can of rhino liner and was going to paint the bottom of the tank for extra insurance and to prevent any rust from road splash. The tank is newly powder coated but you can never be too careful.
Installed the radiator and front end. Just about done getting all the electrical connections made so I can checking my timing on my new Dyna ignition.

Mark: John Neiswinger here. I got received your rotors a couple of days ago. They are in nice shape and have about a mm worth of stock on them so they haven't been machined before. Do you want a similar pattern drilled in them as I did on your previous bike? Do you want me to ship them back to you or to Truedisk?

I really like the look of the gloss black motor with the red. Looks really sharp! Excellent work!

Hello All!
Making some progress as time permits...
Have the electrical set up and tested my new Dyna ignition and coils successfully. Couple minor issues I need to figure out. First, my front turn signals do not flash (the rear do). Not sure if its because I need a 3-way bulb. Suggestions? Also, when I hit the start button, my solenoid clicks but am not getting anything at the starter even though it was rebuilt. Not sure if it’s the starter or a bad solenoid. Lastly, ever so often when I turn on the ignition I get no power. Then if I go back and try again, everything works fine. Maybe a bad ground?

It does sound like you have a weak battery, or a ground problem.. First one to ck is the one from the battery to the frame. Make sure the paint is off from under the connection, and that it is clean and tight

Yep, and it was powder coated.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: Another GL1000 build..."Therapy"
this build is what i would love to do! absolutely amazing! i got out of the gw game for a bit but i just picked up a 77 last weekend. i love the weber set up!. i am currently in the middle of the carb cleaning process and am about to dive into the tank. i have heard everyones opinion on what to do and its cool there are so many options. i wanted everyone to be aware of another method that might not be as well known. i am close to the tulsa ok area, here we have tons cycle land. they have an indoor salvage with many many gw parts, sometimes whole bikes. but they do a service for around $150 (last time i checked) plus core tank. they cut it in half with a band saw and clean it, then coat it if desired and weld it back together. i haven't personally used this service but know a few older wingers in the area that approve. i guess if you're handy with a welder ( i am not ) you could attempt it yourself. keep up the good work everyone!

Another GL1000 build..."Therapy"
Here are some pics of my linkage for my weber setup. Much thanks to Greg Forsi for his guidance on how he did his setup for his "white trash" build.
The first pic is how I created my own throttle cable setup. It took a couple trys to get the cable connector to work, but it give me enough adjustability for the throttle cable. Second pic is my throttle return spring. So far it has a good feel, maybe just a tad too tight so maybe I will need to stretch the spring a bit. Also shows where I installed the fuel pump Also pic of where I installed my electric fuel pump, right on the carb brace.

Re: Another GL1000 build..."Therapy" We have ignition!
Had been chasing electrical gremlins the past several weeks. Replaced starter relay and battery cables with no change. Double, triple checked the battery ground, not change. Was getting 12V to the cable end that connects to the starter (when start button engaged and cable not connected), but only 5-6V with the cable connected at the starter. So I figured the starter was bogging everything down. Although I originally had rebuilt the starter, I never bench tested it. Anyway, took it out and apart and everything seemed to be in order. I did test it and it spun just fine as well. However I was thinking that maybe, just maybe the contact point of the starter (where it bolts to the engine) might not be getting a good ground (I had painted both the engine and starter). So I sanded off the paint and reinstalled everything. Low and behold, the engine fired right up....thankfully. I was getting nervous that the starter clutch was froze or worse...
Anyway here is a very short and cheesy video.
