I can remember in 72 we had a Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser Station Wagon. Absolute Beast of a car. Like 6,000 pounds and made for a large family and trailer towing with a 455 under the hood. Two different times Dad came down the street coming home from the Railroad with snow plowing up over the hood and onto the windshield. He later told me he could only go a few blocks at a time as he had to back the car up and climb out a window every so often to clean out the radiator as it kept overheating.

WF, We had a 56 Desoto in Lake Tahoe that did that very thing one Christmas. The snow was very light and fluffy. I made it 3/4 of a block down an unplowed street to my in-law's. The snow would pile up over the hood until the car couldn't go any further, then I'd back up and take another run at it. Wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't been there.

Hello Again Folks;
The backside of January is upon us, as well as week number 4 of this cold. It was 10 below zero F (static) this morning at 4:15 AM and with the windchill it was supposed to feel like -29 ! UGH !
I had to come into the office for a few hours with the help of the block heater and my remote starter the car was nice and warm. We did have about 3" of snow overnight and that will be today's job when I get home this afternoon, I have to clean the driveway.

My personal record of six straight days of riding in Calgary, in January, has come to an end. This morning I got to get the Plow Truck fired up to clear the driveway. Temps in the mid minus teens C for the next three days, but they 'guess' at above freezing by mid next week.

Temps here have been pretty much the same as at Mike's but I think we got a little less snow. That's about the only advantage of not living near a lake. Kay's CR-V has Honda's automatic 4WD so she can get through just about anything that isn't higher than her bumper without trying hard. If there is enough clear space to push Eccles out of the garage I can usually get down the driveway (its downhill so it has to be pretty deep before I don't try) and get out, as long as the road is clear.

When we moved to this house we used to have real winters and it was not uncommon for me to arrive home to find 6" or more in the driveway. At first I dutifully parked the bike on the road and trudged to the garage to get out the blower so I could drive up to the garage. But no matter how careful I was I always had to clear the snow off of the bike again just to drive less than 50 feet so after a while I started taking a good run at it and plowing through whatever there was to park inside before I cleared the driveway. Sometimes it took a few tries and I had to roll backwards down my tracks or shovel out around the wheels to get it moving again and more than once I contemplated installing an electric winch in the garage to pull it up the hill, but it was all part of the fun of winter biking :P :P

The last few winters have been really easy, though. I don't think the drift that always forms about 2/3 of the way up has been more than a foot and a half deep in the last 5 years. And that has helped turn me into a bit of a wimp.

Last year, while waiting for my rotator cuff surgery, we decided it would be wise to leave the blower in the shed and have someone clear the snow for us so we arranged for a local "equipment" guy to come with his backhoe. He only does what he can get with the bucket but I was able to get the rest with the scoop without having to do any lifting. Our bill was about $100 last year (not that much more than the cost of running the blower) so this year, we decided that, with me still officially recovering from the surgery until last week, we should hire him again. If this year's bill is around the same I just might be convinced to sell the blower :8) :orange :2thumbs

Anyway, the 14 day forecast says it is going to steadily warm up from here on, but you know what they say about long range forecasts...
