Yep. I bought a parts bike so I could change my '83 from the 1000 engine that was in it for 21 years to an 1100 and by the time I was done I spent over $1000 CAD.

Is that including the parts bike?

I'm not terribly worried about the cost, thus is something I want to do. It might be slow as I gather funds, but it will get done. And at $1000, I could still theoretically sell the bike for my input (assuming it gets running).

I basically just want to get all my ducks in a row so I can start disassembling everything.

Very complete list. My only comment would be to say that the fuel pump isolators are pretty hardy. You probably won't need one, but it won't hurt to renew it, of course.

Yeah but the parts cost more than the bike. And it totalled almost as much as it my total cost from when I put the bike together (including buying my wreck and buying the '83 to put its engine in). On the other hand, if you add in everything I've spent on it in the last 21 years other than tires, oil changes &c it and including the sidecar the total would be less than what we paid for my wife's latest car. so I guess that's not too bad

I'll give it a once over when I take it apart, but if I'm in there anyways I'll probably change it.

The parts will probably cost more than the bike, but not more than the bike would be worth. Plus, it's my first bike and I'd like to fix it. Makes it feel more like my own.

There are worse things to spend money on...
Stick with Honda head gaskets. There's nothing special about any of the o-rings, but it's just easier to buy the OEM (I use Partzilla.com all the time). I've also gotten high quality parts and good prices at Sirius, like the rocker cover gaskets and bolt grommets, and IIRC, exhaust gaskets as well. Nothing special about the cam seals either...

Any idea about the Sirius valve seals? 10 for $16 almost seems too good to be true. Haha.

I've seen the Athena kit, but not what it actually contains. Is there a list of what I need on top of it?

Are you happy with the quality of the head gaskets?

The head gaskets seem OK so far but I've only gone 150 Km with them so far. The parts guy at my local Honda dealer says Athena are the best aftermarket sets he can get. The rest of the gaskets look a lot like genuine Honda gaskets I've bought in the past.
Note that with the exception of head gaskets I usually cut my own from Fel-Pro 0.8mm gasket sheet that I buy at Canadian Tire. (If you are careful you can cut all the gaskets needed for a CX/GL500/650 from one roll)

The Athena kit included all the gaskets needed for a complete rebuild except the ones that come glued to the Cylinder Head Covers (the plates that bolt to the fronts of the heads and back the timing belt covers) and aren't available separately from Honda (I cut them from cork & rubber sheet I had on hand). It also had new rocker cover seals (but no bolt seals) and timing belt cover seals that were a bit too long (I was able to use them by carefully gluing them while gently compressing them into alignment and then bolting them in place to clamp the seals in place while the glue cured).

While it is easy to figure out where each gasket goes by looking at it, the o-rings are another matter. As is common with gasket kits there is no list of which ring goes where so I spent a whole evening going through each of the parts drawings for the engine (available on any North American dealer's website) and measuring rings to figure out what went where, then emailed Athena to ask about what I thought were extras and missing. After a number of lengthy emails I learned that, for example, they supply a round o-ring to use for the oil strainer cover. Several of the sizes were ones that Honda specified smaller or larger than optimum and Athena supplied ones they expected were close enough but ended up being farther from optimum than Honda's. And then there's the one for the timing port on top of the engine: They supplied what Honda specifies but it is not the correct size (I happened to have some silicone o-rings that are just about perfect).

Hopefully the time their rep and I spent corresponding about this will result in rings being supplied that will be closer to what is actually needed but it might take a while for the current stock to be used up.

Unless the implication is that this bike is a money pit, but (knock on wood) it hasn't been terrible so far. And I'm learning, which makes me happy. Haha.
