Yeah been looking at that one....goes for less than $100 if you shop around!

That part of the job has stopped for the moment until a waterpump and my new toy (fuel/air ratio meter) arrive.

I am currently re-building 2 pairs of fork legs....1 with polished bottoms and the other set with maybe painted black bottoms. Not sure which set to use. I think the polished set will look out of place on this bike. It's amazing what some people use for oil in their forks....the spare set had hypoid oil in them.....must have been an amazing ride!

Thought I recognised that weird "Q" from my early computer days!

BTW that's a real cool build you have going there! I like those coloured wheels. I have a spare set which I could strip and powdercoat. Maybe the Chevvy red orange for the hubs and rims with black spokes......got me thinking now......I wonder!

Ok we're up and at it again!

Finally scored a set of Lester wheels so time to get a few more things done:

Rebuilt 2 more sets of forks........polished lowers or Black?

Image

I think black given the choice.

While they are out.............headrace upgrade to rollers. Couldn't really get to grips with the gobbledegook that came with them so did it this way......overall height of original lower ball race from top of outer (frame bit) to lower stem bearing face = 18.5mm. Height of new roller including seals = a tad under 15.5mm. Difference is more or less 3mm. Big flat washers supplied are a shade under 3.5 and 5mm, so the smaller one under the lower inner bearing on the steering stem. Result is the lock stops hit the frame at almost exactly the same spot as they did before. I think you are also supposed to grind off the riveting under the top nut but I didn't bother with that. Fits fine and adds just about 1.5mm to the distance between the 2 steering yokes.

Lower outer race in place:

Image

Removed the bearings from the the Lesters, prepped for paint and then 2 coats of the engine colour:

Rear:

Definitely the black forks:

The disc rotors in the picture are courtesy of the California Wing Nut. They are going to get the drill treatment.
Bearings, new rear tyre on order.....more later

I like the black forks best on your build. Lesters look great, getting ready to paint my rear Lester soon.

Thanks!
The Lesters were quite a time consuming job to prep. Lots of corners and edges. I was going to do them 2 tone, orange for the spokes and black for the hubs and rims. I even considered powdercoating them all over but that would mean relying on someone else to do it right and in a timely manner so I did myself and am very happy with the way they turned out.
I also used the "don't use on aluminium" purple degreaser to clean them up to start with which gives an etched style finish which the paint seems to stick to quite well.
Disc rotor drilling tomorrow!

I am painting my Bright Red like the front Lester on BADDOG and the current back Henry Abe Star (which is comming off for a future project). Appreciate the note you provided on the purple degreaser as that finish will certainly help paint stick better. They are a pita to prep with all those tight corners.

I believe that may be a 16 inch Lester you have pictured above. Keep in mind that the brake disk studs must be remove to have room to install the rear caliper. If the disk is bolted to the wheel, there is not room to get the caliper off the disk. So either double nut those studs for easy removal later in the field, or replace them with 9.8 grade 8 mm by 1.25 mm pitch by 30 mm long hex bolts. I plan on doing the hex bolts the next time I put the rear wheel on.

I'll take you word for that Jeffo as it's not possible to see what size that is! lolol
It beats me why anyone, except the extremely vertically challenged, would want to lower a bike which has not a lot of ground clearance, especially with the extra weight of bolt ons added to them over here in the USA?

Back to the build:

Discs drilled to the Gregforesi pattern. Thanks for the free template:

Bearings finally made here. Chose the closest seller on eBay. Took 10 days to come 120 miles. Magic!

Bearings in discs on:

Image

Re-thought the speedo drive and used one of the disc mount bolts with a magnet epoxied in a hole drilled in the head. The sender is bolted to the top of the redundant cable speedo drive

Wheel mounted magnetic bolt is just visible:

Image

All bolted up, wheel balanced etc:

Start on the rear tomorrow.

Q. Why did you install a 16" rear Lester that will lower yours then ?

That's looking lovely....I like the red wheels and black lowers.

What speedo are you using? (OK I'm being lazy here, I'll work back and check this!) Nice solution for the magnet, by the way, it's not at all noticeable there.

I think you are right using alloy wheels on a machine which will have so much extra torque too....you'd rip the wires to shreds.
