Hi Whiskerfish.
I'm thinking that your idea of just choking one side will work for now. I can do that manually.
The left side linkage is hooked up and the idle adjustment (mickey mouse) looks like it will work for a little while.
I had to double up the throttle return spring. No wonder the stock spring is so stiff. And I wonder why the springs on the carbs work to open the butterflys. Maybe to take up slop in the linkages? It seems like a lot of springs are just fighting each other. Using a clutch cable for a throttle cable isn't helping either.

I'd like to make it down to Robins on Saturday, but I don't know. The weather will be fine and if I go I might even ride the white one. Cyborg will accuse me of parking the trailer someplace and riding two blocks to get there. He may be right too.
If I stay home and work on this it may actually be ready for a test run sometime next week. Heck, maybe even Sunday. Almost all the hard parts are done. The right side manifold may be finished tomorrow.

I took a photo of where it ended up today but it's badly out of focus and I'm too lazy to run out and get another one. Of course out-of-focus might be a plus so you guys can't see my bubble gum welds.

Wow, this is moving fast! I hope you're right, and look forward to hearing/reading of it running, before the other 78 is found.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

While I find the whole thing interesting, and your fab work and white trash bike are pretty darn awesome....l still find myself asking why. Is this a 'just because' moment?

We'll see about Decatur.

Zavikan - you hit the nail on the head. It's a "just because" moment (or month).
I've been working on the concept for Weber sidedrafts for 5 years and the design work was done. I have an engine test stand now and the engine I picked up is pristine. It just seemed like a good time to test the theory. Using the stock carbs is way cheaper than buying Webers for an untested design. I'll end up with less than $100 in this.
Hours on the other hand...I probably have putzed with the design for over a thousand hours. I knew pretty much everything that was going to be involved. The time was now to either poop or get off the pot.

Just because sometimes looks are everything. I think it looks sorta alright. Kinda sorta.
From the front, no one will have a clue what they're looking at.

It's just about ready to fire up. I don't have mufflers for the pipes on the engine stand. There are no air filters. Anyone think some el-cheapo mufflers from O'Reillys would be a good idea? It's going to be way lean the way it is. (Ahem - if it runs.)

It should be pretty easy to sync the two sides together. At least if I'm looking at the linkage correctly. You could use rubber bands to hold shop towels over the mouth of each stack.

Cheap mufflers won't hurt. But more so you can hear the engine than changing how lean it may be. If I just put a rag over the end of my open headers on the race bike's it really quiet's it down. You can then really here how loud the engine is. ;)

I still say just put some tape over maybe half the mouth of the inlet.

WF said something about using the choke. That could work if you have it working smothly. I would think it would be best if all four were choked to to use that.

Syncing will be easy. I was able to incorporate the stock left-to-right sync gizmo. There aren't any vacuum ports but I have the sync tool from the Webers. It's a flow meter that plugs into the velocity stacks.

I didn't hook up the chokes. The right side is easy because that's where the bracket is for the stock system. Maybe I can pick apart my old bicycle and use a cable to run the left side choke off the right side actuator. The angles of the stock link points make this messy.

It's time to sit back and stare at it for a bit. I want to make sure I didn't miss a trick somewhere. Then I'll got through it all again and make sure everything is tightened down (and that I pulled the shop towels out of the ports). I'll stare at the choke again and see if I can come up with something quick and dirty.

The amount of force the springs are putting on that 1/4" rod running through the wood blocks is creating a lot of drag in the linkage.

I didn't know whether I should plug the vent lines for the air-cutoff valve or leave them open. So I built a little manifold for the air-cutoff valve and plumbed the lines up like the stock system. The vacuum Tees and lines put me over a hundred bucks though. Another budget shot.

Thanks guys. Before you throw out anymore compliments let's see if it fires up.
The word "Convoluted" just came into my head. It's convoluted.
The view from the front is vaguely airplane-ish. B-17 maybe? Something with 4 engines anyway.

The tubes are very rigid. There is no flex anywhere. That is actually one of my concerns. In the long run I can see cracks forming in the joint between the fiberglass tubes and the aluminum base plates. Epoxy resin would be a better choice than the polyester resin. Silicone won't hold up to fuel but I think that joint needs something more elastic than the poly resin. It won't be running long since I don't want the engine to get hurt running real lean. The Honda boxers run real smooth so I'm not going to fab up the cross brace. We'll see if the carbs shake off.

Somebody had a problem with their single carb setup when the 1 3/4" gas fill line got warm and the vacuum collapsed them. On this design the gap between the rear of the carbs and the fiberglass tubes is only 1/16" so that won't happen.

I have hooked up the chokes after a fashion. In the video of the startup (attempt) I'll go into detail about the calibrated choke control I came up with. It's a beautiful thing. Red Green would be proud even though I used something besides duct tape.

It's going to have to crank for a while to get fuel to the carb bowls. I may hook the fuel line straight to the carbs prior to the actual start attempt in order to prime them.
Speaking of the carbs, I've been into them twice and found clogs both times. I haven't rebuilt them but all the jets and passages are open and the carbs look good to me.

If I was Jimmy Houston I'd do something like fire it up prior to taking the video. I won't cuz you guys are smart enough to figure out that I was cheating.
