well i totally missed this thread. i blame... ummm... google?

anyway, i too was skeptical about the fins but they do look interesting in the end. nicely done. have you considered "no step" instead of a honda logo?

this would look even excellent-er with the material between the ribs removed, but only on the domed portion.... additional negative space or something. while it would ruin your mounting scheme for the plexi shields, i am confident you can overcome that minor setback anim-cheers1

Good point,
I won't be using the same plastic that was used for the signs. Although, some came with the machine when I purchased it, along with the old block letters.
I'd use polycarbonate (Lexan) which has a softening temp around 300 degrees.
I'll need to get a GL1000 to operating temp and see how hot the belt covers get. I wouldn't think it would be over 200d or so.
Great to keep these old 'Wings flying on down the road.

The cover temp is under 200F. Normally around 150-180

I thought about that also.
Easily done, but I think it would not leave much strength for the fins, but also would be a pain to clean up the inside cast "ribs"
They are easily seen when viewing from the top....

I might end up painting to complete the circle and sand down the fins.
Here's a sacrificed cover to show what I'm thinking...

I ordered some 1/16" polycarb today, so I guess I need to bring the vacuum form machine down, or get a longer 220vt cord and leave it up in the loft and get myself elevated. :IDTS:

Trying to find time to get back to this "little" project.
Received the polycarb and should be able to play around with the vac form machine this weekend.

Did get a chance to clean up the road rash on the case guards and get them powder coated flat black.
Started with this
case guard 001.jpg
grind down the rust to get some clean metal to weld to
case guard 002.jpg
Tig on some filler
case guard 003.jpg
grind down to see what areas need more
case guard 004.jpg
coat, then temporarily mount

I did think about cutting windows above the fins on the valve covers.
Maybe following the curves of the upper portion, but I agree, would just look like oil splashing around and you really couldn't see the "action" in there.

So, if I'm going to go this route...
timing cover cutout.jpg
I'll cut out more where the two red marks are so the contacts can be seen.
If it looks too much like Mickey Mouse, I might cut two more at the bottom. shakehands

OK guys, soooooooo, where else do I need a window to the inner working of the GL1000 before I start forming the windows?

Nice job on rebuilding the engine guards. Your cutting holes in things to see, and show, how they function just reminded me of something I saw as a young boy. A bit more organic in nature, but I think the same idea. I grew up right across the road from the University of Alberta agricultural research facility in Edmonton. On Saturdays, you could go over there and they would let you walk around the barns, and some of the labs. It was 50 years back now, but I still remember this one massive cow, maybe a bull, I can't recall the genitalia. It had a glass window on one side of its abdomen, I had no idea what the heck I was looking at, but it sure looked cool. I almost went to Veterinarian School because of that.

Love what your doing with your build.

Cool story. Maybe with this build I can get some youngens that see the bike to continue the tradition of keeping 'em on the road.
