Ol smokey running:
http://youtu.be/rau4L9M8Rs0
Bypassing the switch worked to get the fan going and I think that takes care of the overheating issue. Still have the smoking issue obviously. It didn't smoke at startup today but the warmer it got the more it smoked. Head gasket?

And another.

These backfire sounds and knocking or whatever aren't there in person. I think its too loud for my tablet mic and making up sounds. Another vid I took with the tablet closer makes it not sound right at all.
Warning turn down volume, this is not a pleasant sound:

Don't run it any more until you do get it figured out. Is the smoke white or blue? Does it smell sweet? Are you loosing any coolant? Is the oil milky looking through the site glass?
You can rent a radiator pressure tester from most any auto parts store these days. Do that and see what happens. I'd do a leakdown test too if you can. That will tell you more.

83gl1200, what kind of pipes/mufflers are those? I like the sound.

I bought them off eBay, a one off listing. The box they came in says drag specialties 202084, but I think they are actually emgo slash cut shorties. There appears to be a baffle but sound more open than anything. Like cherry bombs.John Schmidt wrote:83gl1200, what kind of pipes/mufflers are those? I like the sound.
The smoke is half white half bluish, and oil drips from head gaskets externally onto the headers also. When the bike is shut down it still has smoke coming out of the pipes afterwards for a while while oil or something burns off. Smells like oil burning, don't know if its loosing coolant there is only water in there for now. The Water in the radiator isn't oily and the oil doesn't look like its contaminated with water.
I think it has overheated before I got to it and ruined the head gaskets. But that's just a guess.

Re: GL1100 Cheap E-Z Single Carb Conversion
I should have already changed the oil, but I didn't. Wanted to see if the engine even worked before wasting new oil in it. As it turns out 4.5 quarts of oil came out of her and google says 3.4, so I may have dodged a bullet on the smoke. I'm guessing that could easily cause both the smoking and leaking.
I wish putting the right level in would stop the external leaking from the heads, but I doubt it.
It smelled like it had some gas in it which doesn't surprise me. Those carbs are gone now though, so hopefully the vw carb won't leak any more gas into the oil.
I'll take the rest of this ongoing saga to my own post since it's now pretty clear the new carb is not part of the problem. If I have trouble with tuning the carb then I'll come back to this thread.
thanks again guys...

Re: GL1100 Cheap E-Z Single Carb Conversion
Lots of folks here with the early models report oil consumption almost disappears if you run it at the level line, about a half quart lower than you might think. If mine was at the top of the sight window, it would lose half a quart quickly. Keep it at or slightly below the line and it doesn't move noticeably from oil change to oil change. I haven't noticed it with my 1200 yet.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Note/question for Ericheath; I see in your profile that you mounted a Valkyrie seat on one of your bikes. I have a couple Valk seats I wouldn't mind putting one to use so wondering how you did it. I'm in the process of bringing an '84 Std. back to life with a Valkyrie tank and "possibly" a Valkyrie seat.

Re: GL1100 Cheap E-Z Single Carb Conversion
Lots of things I do.... should not be done. My bike was modified in the rear frame to lower it. I just hacked the plastic subframe out along the runners with snips. Then serrated the end of a piece of plastic pipe like a hole saw. I used it to cut the slots down the foam for the frame. I then abs glued it together with plastic and abs pipe cut lengthwise. Not pretty on the under side. It's pretty wide on the bike. I cut a lot of foam out from the top and sides too. I'm 5'10 and flat foot both feet with knees bent a bit. Mine is a 77 frame, higher than your 83.

Re: GL1100 Cheap E-Z Single Carb Conversion
Update: it's the vw carb leaking fuel. After changing the oil yesterday I found it hydrolocked. Took out the plugs on the left and sure enough the left rear cyl was full of fuel, the lowest intake runner when on the side stand. Have to pull the carb and see what's up. The bike has an electric fuel pump, need to see if its putting out too much pressure for the vw float to stop. Do any of the auto parts stores rent a fuel pressure gauge?dkl wrote:Glad to hear it's coming along...give us a update on the carb...when you hit the road.
Thanks for the tip on keeping the oil below fill line ericheath, I hadn't read that before and its the opposite of what I would have naturally done.
