Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
I need some help guys. My new Digital gauge has some of the worst directions ever.
Where do I tap in the new Tach RPM wire?
Here is a small section the Install Instructions. I'm looking for the Ignition Coil Positive Electrode?
I think that is the easiest spot that will give me the most accurate reading?
looking at this picture, it's installation option B
can someone show me a picture of where I need to go?
Next question, this wire diagram shows 2 temperature sensor wires.
the purple Water Temperature wire which i connected to the temp gauge wire, but then there is another with this cool sensor...
it looks like it could screw into the engine block or like it could be part of an in-line adapter in the radiator coolant tubes.
I'm just reaching for ideas on that one....

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
The tach wiring looks simple. Option A=wrap the wire around a sparkplug wire.(I had one like this and it was kinda flaky) B on the hot side of the coil,C= on the points or pickup side of the coil. The temp bulb goes in the upper radiator hose with the lead coming out where the hose goes on the thermostat housing. (It won't leak too bad if the clamp is REALLY tight!) At least that's how the one I had was.

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
U connected the purple one to what sensor? The one screwed into the block? Then its okay. The second option seems to be for bikes that have no extra sensor..... So if u connected the purple one it should be alright

hmratbam, Can you show me exactly where is the Hot side of the coil?
Jack the Dwarf: the purple wire I ran straight to where the hot wire of the old temp gauge.
hmratbam: i understand what your saying about the temp sensor. but i think I'll try and do it somewhat cleaner.
something like this maybe?
http://www.rallysportdirect.com/Greddy- ... Ogod13wAVA
can anyone tell me the exact diameter of the radiator hose in standard AND metric? so i know I'm getting the correct adapter with temp sensor fitting?

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
OH WOW.. nevermind... i found the Napa part number for the radiator hose I purchased.. it's a 1" hose.
then I found EXACTLY what I wanted
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Silver-24mm-Wat ... fe&vxp=mtr
DONE.. ordered. it will be here before Monday! BAM.. I'll install it INLINE on the top radiator hose. is there any problem removing the top radiator hose spring thingy?! i'm sure it's there for protection in case the hose bursts but with the safety in today's hoses? I'm going to ditch it.... or maybe I'll cut it in half and use it twice.
I dunno.. I'm more excitement about finding EXACTLY the right tool / part for the job!

Hmmm i still dont get why you want to put something in the hose.... If you connectet the purple wire to the old (yellow) wire of your temp sensor it should be enuff.....

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
So I got a little more done. I re did the wire harness work. I soldered everything nice and used heat shrink wrap so I did it right. Now everything fits in the headlight bucket.
I swapped the flasher and now my turn signals flash.
I picked up my front fender from the paint shop, picked up the front forks from the bike shop and got the front end put together.
Put the front tire on, break calipers, and a few more front end rid bits.
Here are more pics.

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
I keep looking at these cables and even the front break lines. TOO LONG!!!!!!!
IDEAS??
Everything needs to be shortened.
I need to chop off about 6" (maybe even 8"-10") from the clutch and throttle cables and about 3-6" from the front break hose.
It's ok!! I have a backup of all 3 of them!!

Re: SlyDog's Cafe' Project 2 - '80 GL1100 (SDC)
The "hot" side of the coil is the side with whatever the voltage is after the ignition resistor. Or the voltage switched by the ignition switch. The "other" side would be where the points or mag pickup connects. From what I saw in the instructions you posted you can hook up either place. I think I mentioned that I used the "wrap the wire around a plug wire" option and the tach was essentially useless. I subscribe to Fish's view of tachometers."Wind it 'til it quits pulling and then shift" so "I don't need no stinkin" tach."
I like your solution on the temp bulb, much more sanitary than their's,but their "normal" customer doesn't have your knowledge and skills. My Hotrod has an oil pressure light and a speedometer to (hopefully) keep me from attracting the attention of the local gendarmerie.
