The hole next to the stud is the drain hole...it is there so the spark plug cavity doesn't fill up with water. Unfortunately, many get plugged up with debris, and don't always drain effectively.
As long as your gaskets are all the way up, and there is only one on each hole, you should be fine.
I had a cylinder go down on the last bank holiday here in the UK, May 1st. A shame really as I was looking forward to the Mayday Run, a massive run to Hastings, East Sussex, 90000 people roughly in quite a small seaside town.
A mechanic mate said move the spark plug of the cylinder that is not firing to any other cylinder and see if it still doesn't run, if so the its the plug gone down. To say I was sceptical to say the least but he was right, couldn't believe it was as simple as just changing the plug as I thought it would be deep in the electrical system or carbs
If 1982 and 1983 are the same. 9.1oz. for fork oil, is this per leg?
And I couldn't find what weight oil to use as I have removed the fairing and gubbins and ride a little sporty should the weight with the new progressive springs be higher than standard?
Im wondering how much is in the original control leads as I didnt measure the hight of the original bars and how would the ride/handling feel with high straight bars?
Andy, I've just come back form 950 miles around Arkansas on my '82 Fat Turtle, rode like a charm, motocross bars were great, just needs some 20mm risers, cables can all stay standard. My chopped down Triumph Triple seat killed me the last 100 miles though, need to rethink it completely.
Go with what feels comfortable for your riding style.
Looks like someone rounded off the original head and ground it down and added a nut. If it removes the cover there is nothing wrong with it except cosmetic.

In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird.
Now the world is Weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

I like the taller bars myself.
I have run many miles without a front fender. Quite a few in the rain.
Ive never had any problems but it does create a mess to clean up.
Just depends on what you'rewilling to deal with I guess.

There's an aftermarket replacement for that oil filter housing bolt with a 17mm head for easier on/off ....
Just be sure you don't overtighten it.
