Re: Any Off the wall custom building being done to thier GLs ???
Well, let me start the 'right' ball rolling. I have a stock 83 in black and chrome that I just love, but I yearn for an 'off the wall' custom, so I just bought a basket case '81 Interstate without the fairing and saddle bags for $500. The motor runs (and is quiet) but everything else is in a mess, including the wiring.
I'm happy with the Comstars (cause I can paint 'em or plate 'em) but wanna fit upside-down forks, wave discs, Webers, have the cams ground, do a mad rear 'guard with LED tail light etc, and of course a custom seat and exhaust.
I've heard that Webers from early 90's Alfasud will fit with a simple fabricated inlet manifold. But I really don't know where to start looking for upside-down forks and triple clamps.
Another challenge will be instruments. I don't necessarily want a tacho, but a speedo is essential. Are there any old Honda CB900 parts or similar that can be modified to fit, or can a digital speedo be set up?

Here's a tread you'll like on the inverted forks. Scroll down the page a bit for some good photos. You'll probbably want to go back through the thread for more info on the "how he did it!"

There's also a member here who sells "Big disc" brake set-ups, but the link I had saved is no longer working...
Anyway, good luck, and we LOVE pics!

Re: Any Off the wall custom building being done to thier GLs ???
Well now here's a weird one. I took the rear fender off the 76 yellow - ya know, just to see what it looked like with just the Corbin Gunfighter and the grab bar - and I thought to myself hmmmmm there must be a way to fabricate a lil fender to make it look "sport bike-ish"... so I glance up on the wall of the garage and there is an an old '76 shelter center piece with no gas gauge and no lock hanging on the wall. So I look back at the bike... and call me crazy but that looks like it might actually fit (with a little cutting) and maybe I can make a licence plate bracket to cover the lock hole and maybe I can actually make a GL1000 custom rear fender with authentic GL1000 parts!!!
I'll post some photos when I'm done

Re: Any Off the wall custom building being done to thier GLs
I have been trying to fabricate a new tank cover (faux tank, whatever you call it) from fiberglass. Progress is slow but so far the outcome is reasonably good. I have cut down a stock set of gauges from an interstate (I'm working with an Aspencade SE i here). These will end up in the center console on the tank in place of the digital trip computer. My goal is an old school look (aka. Indian) look and to loose all the digital crap just waiting to malfunction. This summer will be the last time this bike is redden in stock form. Pics to come later.

Re: Any Off the wall custom building being done to thier GLs
I had an old timer tell me nice things about my BMW years ago when I had a 78 naked wing. I just smiled and said thanks! He didn't ride andymore and meant it as a compliment so what the heck. My cousin and his friends all ride V-twins. NOT HARLEYS - Jap V-Twins. I rode with them a few weeks ago on my 76 Wing and they loved it. They have been on bikes since the honda 450 was new!

Re: Any Off the wall custom building being done to thier GLs
I have a '79 GL1000.
Currently under work:
Single swing arm
Exposed drive shaft
New (turned) rear hub for spokes
New frame
New front end? (Haven't made that choice yet)
New tank on top
Seat lowered 6" or more
New wiring
New headers and pipes (one piece)
Straigh bars
Peg forward and tucked positions
Maybe a slim chance of better carbs
But I'll post pics as soon as I can
Sincerely,
DAV

I hate signature lines. Probably because mine is short.
