Yes and I tested it for leaks before putting it on the bike, which is why I think I should check how much pressure this pump puts out.

But I didn't check it for leaks on an angle equal to the side stand, which makes it pretty steep, and I could have missed something. It can't be that complicated to figure out, just need to find the time and energy to get back out there and keep banging my head against the wall.

I took it off and took the top off the carb. It leaks on an angle even with a low fuel level. Fuel pours out the aluminum arm in the top of the carb that's part of the carb body, not the movable accelerator pump arm. I don't see what the problem is, it's clean, gaskets replaced, float needle working fine. Even without the top on the carb, no fuel pump involved and no float involved, it just pours out that arm whenever it's at an angle.

I also spoke to the guys at classic wings site, and one of those fellas told me a story about a pvc manifold on a generator which blew up from a backfire and sent the carb flying leaving a loose fuel line, which burned the whole thing down.

After hearing that I think I'm adding some steel to mount the top of the carb to the frame so that it can act as a ground, and keep it solid so it can't go anywhere if the manifold totally gave out.

For the record he said they were using starting fluid to get it running, so may not even be an issue for us, but better safe than sorry. Backfires can occur on these too, so why not.

Yes
I have said before its an empi 34 Pict 3 I rebuilt with a Napa kit, it was used. This is probably the reason it was sold in the first place. I'll figure it out, I'm reading vw forums time permitting, and need to get to the store for some more carb spray to clean it again. It could be I just missed a port with the first cleaning, or maybe some tiny spec of junk was in my fuel lines.

I have learned there are ball bearings in some races which need to be moving freely that you cant see and I suspect them.

That really is a simple conversion guys, and I'm tempted to do something similar on my Interstate, but I still want to know how much power you lose by going from 1 carb per cylinder to 1 carb per engine? Cheers, Terry.

All I can tell you is I have a 81 with the conversion, and a 82 with really good stock carbs. I'm a good rider, but I'm not good enough to ride em at the same time, but if I could, I believe the conversion would smoke the stock carbs. I will have bike all the way complete for the Fourth of July weekend, and I plan on making a long haul some where. A sure nuff long trip should answer a lot of questions. It will either be the best and simplest project I have ever done......or a long walk home.

Thanks mate, it almost seems too good to be true, but I'm not doubting you, I couldn't believe just how bad the stock CV carbs on a Honda CX500 were until I bought a set of Murray Feldman's Mikuni's, they (along with a freer flowing exhaust) really made that little V twin get up and bark, and I know that the GL1000-1200 CV's are pretty much the same design as the CX500 CV's, so I'm betting that any carb conversion would be a good thing. Cheers, Terry. :)

instead of quick reply use post reply, or full editor. You'll see upload attachment option in the full reply editor at the bottom, choose file to attach and choose upload. Then post the message with the uploaded attachment.

Please, if you want to make such claims, present a dyno report to back it up. The members of this board are here for advice and facts. Such a statement without evidence could lead people to making decisions that they may regret.
