To speed the results, maybe you should give details as to which Webers, which Venturi chokes, and what jets you have now. There are a few members with them.

Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

My Weber's are 40 IDFs. Bought brand new. I believe I am going with the factory installed Main Venturi tubes. I believe they are 28s???
I'm running 50 idles with 110 mains and 165 air correctors. I just ordered 52 idles per some comments from Greg Foresi's "White Trash" build.
I currently am not running and velocity stacks inside my air filters.
Any yes, it seems my headlamp is pointing towards the skies. Will have to fix that.

I might try playing with my accelerator pump screws again. They have about 1/4" of thread showing. From what I understand, this really effects when the throttle is wide open. Curious if I need bigger accelerator pump nozzles? Not sure what they came with. Just hard to tell if its running lean or rich. I assume lean with the rush of air when the plates are wide open. I am not pretending to be an expert (at all) on the subject, but just from what I have learned researching.
Like I stated the main symptom of this problem is the bike bogs when I load the engine significantly. It seems to run fine everywhere else.

If once it starts to bog, and you let off of it, does it pick back up like nothing happened, or does it continue to stumble a bit?

When I let off the throttle after accelerating it runs just fine.
On another not so funny note. Last night while I was playing with the carbs I must have had too much gas collecting in one of the carbs because after I started it, I noticed a nice glow within the air filter. I plucked the air filter off and half of the foam had caught fire and melted...some inside the carb throats. . time to pull the carb out for a cleaning...

Another GL1000 build..."Therapy"
Looking at running some velocity stacks within my air filters. They are very hard to come by for the 40 IDF. These are the only ones that would work. Thoughts?
Also, this is a very interesting diagram on the ideal shape for velocity stacks. Would be nice for someone to manufacture the ones like #8 or #11 for the 40 IDFs

Update to Another GL1000 build..."Therapy"
Success!
So chasing my carb issues and I did the following:
- Drained the fuel out of the tank. Noticed some gunk at the bottom. Cleaned that out and removed the nasty screens and the bottom. Filled her up with clean gas.
- pulled both carbs and cleaned all the Jets. Decided to go from 100s to 110s on the mains per Randall's recommendation.
- readjusted to best lean idle. This time around I paid special attention to the idle adjustment screws not turning them in too much to uncover more progression holes. Currently at about 1/4 to 1/3 from seated. Idle mixture screws in 1 turn a around. Idles perfectly at 900 rpm.
Took her for a 10 mile spin and noticed a vast improvement when accelerating hard. Stumbles just a tad much hardly as much as before.
Still want to run VS in my air cleaners but concerned on adequate clearance. Would love to make some like #11 in the diagram about. A ring about 3/4 inch high and flat on the bottom would seems to work good. Just need to figure how to do that.
Making progress...

if you can get me a stp or step file, I should be able to make you an experimental set.shieldsm wrote:Looking at running some velocity stacks within my air filters. Wow this is inspiring, nice job! At first I planned on just getting my 1977 gl1000 in working condition but a total restore / transformation is very appealing. I like how the front handlebars look and the front in general much cooler then the stock setup.
