Yup, that one finally made it back into the rotation. Got a couple sticky slides, plus I left gas in them too long, so we're looking at a full tear-down. Thankfully I'm pretty good at doing that.
I did some more puttering on the exhaust pipes. I threw the mufflers on to the buffing wheel, and while they weren't bad starting out, a little bit of help made them look REAL good.
I'll be honest, while I liked the fact that stainless is a bit more forgiving than old chrome (I was able to polish out old battery stains, for instance), I was curious how the luster would stack up against chrome. I shouldn't have worried.
The only thing I needed were baffles, and I got REAL lucky and was able to pull them from my old pipes. In the process I made an interesting discovery. Apparently, between '63 and '65, Honda decided you shouldn't be able to take the exhaust apart anymore. I knew about the headers- they made the headers and mufflers "one piece" by welding a rim on the end of the muffler, welding a crimp ring on the headers, and crimping the two parts together. What I DIDN'T know is Honda also made the baffles non-removable, but in the simplest way possible. The mounting bolt is still there, along with the threads for it on the baffle itself. But once the baffle was in place, Honda just... welded the end of the bolt on the inside of the pipes. I spun the head off the first bolt and just thought it was rusted frozen. When I looked closer I realized that no, it was meant to be like that.
Naturally, this means I need to drill and tap the mounting threads for the baffles, but all thing considered that's fairly simple to do.
