Kick Start on an 1100..........

#1

Post by Frenchy »

Here's a new one. I've got a customer who wants to put a kick starter on a gl1100.

I've been looking over the proceedures for putting an 1100 motor in a 1000 frame, & think parts of this will apply.

I'll have to pop the rear case off of an 1100 to see what may be involved there.......

I'm going to have to look over the wiring differences between the gl1000 & gl1100 as well, because it will have to have the ignition from the 1000 (75-77 rear case doesn't provide for the 1100).

Alright guys, time to brain storm.....Image

I would asume that you have all ready sudjusted a gl1000 in the 1100 frame? I'm sure that would be the economical way of doing it.

The GL1000 kick starter operates on the end of the crankshaft, the same place that dives the electronic ignition on the 1100. The end of the crank is also different.
Thats not to say that you cant get one to fit, its just going to be real difficult.

Put a kick start lever on, hide a remote starter button under it.
Kick the starter, push the button.

that is one of those things I miss from the good old days

jumping on the kick starter (and having it hit the back of my leg)

along with..... oiling the chain

carrying lots of extra oil....

patching tubes along the highway....

ah yes, and the chase pick-up for break downs

gawd I miss the good old days

I also remember kick starting a bike into life. I also remember nearly being launched over the hadlebars of a big single. Dam that kick back could hurt.
I have yet to hear of anyone getting a thumb injury from an engine kicking back on an electric starter. :)

I often hear the phrase `The good old days' I remember them to, using my british bikes for work from Monday to Friday, then fixing them over the weekend. OK we could fix them with only a few tools, but I for one seemed to be always using them.
Now we use our bikes when we wish, knowing that the bike will start when we want with very little maintenace being required.
Still miss the old BSA's and Triumph's though, looking at teh possibility of buyin a 1954 500 Ariel Trails bike at the moment. :)

Don't forget to install a manual spark advance to make it more interesting to the spectaters. That spark advance saved my '63 BSA Super Rocket one day. Witnesses said when it kicked back, the "thief" went way over the windshield resulting in a broken leg. Willie
