Anyone running LDWingnuts single carb?

#1

Post by cc1911 »

I ordered one of these complete kits and installed it on my Aqua 75. It was a fairly straight forward task, fired right up but absolutely will not idle, won't even try. I have rechecked all possible vacuum leaks all are tight. Runs very strong up to about 90 might go further but I dont care to. Would like to hear from anyone else wh has this setup on ther bike.... :-D

I don't have one, but my brother does on his 79. He had to advance the timing a good bit to get it to idle right. I have one of his manifolds and a solex 30 carb that I'm eventually going to try on my 1100.

Im happy with the overall performance of the setup, I have ordered a clear timing plug so I can play with the timing with a strobe, I am also running a Dyna setup with 2 into 1 Jardines on it now.. accelerates much stronger than with the stock setup IMHO

Here's what I learned when I tested this conversion:

http://www.randakks.com/Review%20of%20L ... ersion.htm

Did you cap the vacuum port on the carb? It is not needed on a GL1000. That fact was not mentioned in the instructions provided with the kit.

Are you aware that on a Solex carb, the idle mixture screw controls "air" not "fuel?" So, lean/rich adjustments are "backwards" compared to the OEM Keihin carbs.

Thank you for reading my post, I actually read your account very closely and ordered a master carb kit and video from you (which I am still working on) I bought this setup to put on my other 75 when it is finished, just going to be a daily driver and was looking for simplicity on this one. Since the carbs are off on my Aquq bike (found a broken float bowl support I decided to install and run the single carb temporarily.
I did plug the port as you suggested in your review but the curb idle screw has absolutely no effect, it just will not idle as of yet. I have checked and rechecked for vacuum leaks, the carb actually starts and responds well though.

If you have "no idle" that a bit strange. I found various aspects "sub-optimal" but it delivered a reliable idle...probably it's best feature.

Check to make sure your choke is working correctly (especially if you have an automatic choke carb). I suspect you have some sort of carb problem that is preventing a good idle. An example would be a blockage in the idle circuit.

These are very simple carbs and there's not much that can go wrong but used ones are often worn out.

I just came in from the shop where I was going over this setup with an eagle eye, low and behold I found that the curb idle screw was not making contact with the fast idle cam so a slight tweak and now it idles...should have paid closer attention to detail.. the carb was new in a box so I just gave it a quick check before installation. Now if I can just figure out why the two back cylinders are running rich.....
