COnsidering a couple CX500's.......opinions?

for those of you that have M.B.S. (multiple bike syndrome) and have the "silver wing" models.
as our sponsors also have supplies for those bikes and they are popular with the "wing" crowd.

I am kicking around picking up a CX500 and found these two bike on craigslist. I don't know much about the CX500 so I will leave it to the pros. Let me know what you all think!

They are good little bikes, both of them look overloaded in the pic.

With a lot of work they could be worthwhile.

If they are runners the price seems fair.

I drive one everyday and they are great bikes , I like they way they look , to some they be's ugly but I like different and have always wanted a Guzzi. These bikes are much more dependable than a Moto Guzzi ever thought about . The engine will redline to 10,500 rpm's no problem . They have 50 horses and will give you everyone of them . They are light compared to the gl 1100 I am used too and handle very well . These are " cult " bikes and have a staunch following.
(Google Keith Kimber and Tanya Brown , read all about the trip they made around the world on one. )

I like having bags and a fairing so that's a matter of choice , mine does not , I at least wish I had a good windshield for mine. They have the same fairing as a GL 1100. The bags are very similar to what you could get on the CBX inline 6
. I'd like a pair of GL 1100 bags to fit but that would take a little welding work.
They are rated to top out at about 98 mph , all I know is mine will run 85+ mph all day long.
You can't buy a better bike for the money they get. About 50 mpg too!
Check out the web site club CHOPPERCHARLES.
I will get me another GL 1100 Goldwing one day ,but I'm keeping this little Silverwing !!!
If Honda ever made a bike they should do a slight update on and re-introduce its the SILVERWING.
Like Rat said if they are runners buy them , find out if the camchain and gears has been replaced yet , they HAVE to be at 50,000 miles . If they close to 50,thou and have not , try and get them cheaper!! They good fore another 50 after that is done tho!! I have heard of them getting over 320,000 miles out of these engines.
They are water cooled ,have a driveshaft and the 81 Gl model like mine was the first motorcycle with a single shock rear end, the Prolink .. Easy to maintain too!!
I paid 900 bucks for mine but it only had 9,330 miles !!
On the highway to Hell!

Mixed in throughout time, I have owned a few CX's. The CX500 Custom, and the CX500 TURBO. As well as a GL650 Silverwing. I loved these bikes, they were reliable, strong running bikes. A day doesn't go by that I don;t think about them. Expecially the turbo. Water cooled, shaft driven, V Twin. Half a Wing as a few folks call em. But there's a few good bikes out there that got some undeserving nic names. This was one of them. Then again, is it really a bad thing to get branded half a wing???

Didn't you see, The brain trust at Honda did revisit and up date the SilverWing. It was a over the road giant scooter. Sad . Kinda like then Pontiac Lemoanz's back in the 80's.

Yes I am aware of the scooter they call a SILVERWING , but it's a scooter. They should have called it something else .

What I meant by update was keep the same engine style and maybe put hydraulic valve lifters on it , a self adjusting cam chain made of a longer lasting material , a better front end , rear disc brakes ,
larger rear wheel,bigger tank, fuel gauge, 6th gear,wider footpegs,better seat,stronger clutch ,
better starter clutch, room for a Odyssey type battery, a chrome plated engine, better made petcock,
smaller lighter fairing and real top loading hardbags, type1 whatelse?

Chef, this is probably as close as you are going to get to an updated Silverwing http://powersports.honda.com/2010/nt700v.aspx. I've sat on one in the showroom, its a pretty neat bike. Little on the pricey side but what isn't these days.

Guess no one noticed but that is not 2 cx500's there. The one in front is a CX 500c like mine but the back one is a GL 500. He correctly calls it a Silverwing but then says it is a CX. I prefer the CX bare for cruising and the GL loaded for short tours. I have the GL 1100 for long runs but those Silverwings are great for shorter things like grocery runs or parts runs. Unlike the 1100 they have a power band from just above idle on up so get to 5th and keep it there but for stop lights. The single seater addition makes it a great addition and the fuel milage is lots better than my 1100's.
There is never enough time to do it right but there is always enough time to do it over.
