Piston removal rear brake mc 80
Does anyone have an easy way to remove a frozen piston from a mc. I've tried 120 #'s of pressure to the outlet w/o success. I've been thinking about pouring in some lacquer thinner to "eat" the seals hoping that would allow the removal.
Any good suggestions? I can't seem to be able to hook a slide hammer to the rod to pull the piston.

Two things. Heat the housing. And the other is use a grease gun on the bleeder to force it out

Put the lacquer thinner down. You'll just make it harder. A grease gun over the bleed screw works very well.

Re: Piston removal rear brake mc 80
There's no bleed screw that I can find on the m/c. That being said, I can remove the inlet and bolt on a plate with a zerk installed into it and do the same. A bolt into the outlet would seal the unit and the resulting pressure would force the piston from the unit. Thanks for the information and ideas.
If there are other methods please post them.

After the snap ring is removed, you can take a drift and put it in the banjo bolt hole and drive the piston out by banging the drift end on the workbench or use a hammer.

Re: Piston removal rear brake mc 80
I finally got the piston removed from the mc. After much thought and head scratching, I figured that a small chain could be pinned onto the clevis on the rod. I expanded a chain link to fit over the shaft of a small slide hammer then closed a vice to allow the rod to fit through but not the mc body. Two hits and the piston was free.
Thanks for the help!

Re: Piston removal rear brake mc 80
I have another question. I took the pads off this bike a couple years ago and cannot figure what holds the pads into/onto the caliper. I've looked in the clymers manual and cannot see anything that would hold the pads in place. This is a single piston caliper. Oh yes, I rebuilt the caliper too.

They just hang in there, once they're over the disk they have nowhere to go.

Me too.
I have already drilled a small hole in the M/C piston, put a wood screw in it and the just pulled it out with a claw hammer. Or you can take something small in diameter and push it out from the other end. The end that the brake line bolts to. After you have the circlip off of course.

Re: Piston removal rear brake mc 80
Thanks for the replies. I was really stuck.
Gord, Thanks for that response. It really helped. I see that they are "trapped", when installed.
If I can get a better pedal, I'll have the rear brakes finished. Now I need to start on the fronts.

I have used the grease gun method also it worked great, only fit the grease nipple in the brake line port as far it will go easily any more can damage the threads
