New member with a newly naked wing

Post by BPRM »

Hi my name is Matt, I bought an unloved 81 Interstate for $250, then set about chopping it up.
It needed brakes and complete carb overhauls (one jet couldn't be cleaned and had to be drilled out) to get it running. I replaced the old air shocks with some progressive rate ones and figured I better replace the cam belts to be safe.
It was having some starter issues so I cleaned and lubed it then replaced the stock solenoid with one from a Ford F150.
The frame was painted in place with rattle cans and a brush, and I traded a friend some machine work for the green painted parts. The turn signals were closeout bin parts that were NOS from Gilroy Indians (very high quality and only 2 bucks apiece) and the head and tail lights were off the shelf at Bent Bike. I made the front wiring cover/shield and headlight ears as well as the "50 caliber" pipe covers.
The seat was hacked down to size and then the foam was shaped and covered by Sines custom upholstery. A friend found the bags at the dump and gave them to me but they lacked the part that zipped them together. I got some #10 zippers and figured out a leather piece to hold them, since I didn't want to buy leather dye I used a combination of Rit dye and paint.
I put on a new front tire and rode the heck out of it this weekend, got a lot of looks and comments.

Welcome to Wingdom! I would have been nice to follow you "remodel" online as you did it, builds like yours are often very educational,

I'll post some pictures of the fabrications. I usually restore to spec, so this was fun for me.

Very nice. I especially like the 'upgrade' to the exhaust tips. Nice touch.
