Re: Getting my 1977 GL1000 on the road again!
Thought I would share the reason for the parts bike.:
I certainly hope the forks and/or fork tubes from the 75 parts bike will fit the 77! From my limited research they will. Confirmation?:

I thought so. Now the parts bike has already paid for itself. On that note, the 75 had sat outside for a long time with a plug out of the head. What is the best way to turn a wing motor over without a battery or the kickstart lever? Also, if I were to fill the combustion chamber with something to keep it lubed up, would you use old oil, diesel or maybe something else. I have no plans for the motor as yet, but hate to see it just waste away!

Outside without a spark plug? It's probably already wasted. Quite a few here use diesel and acetone. You can get good leverage using the crank bolt. Remove timing covers. I think an 18mm wrench fits. If it turns easily right away, you are lucky. If not, you might be wiser to pull the head to see what has happened in there. My guess is that in Iowa if any water got in there and froze, you could have bigger problems. Should have lots of usable parts, though.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I would use MMO to fill the cylinders. Let it soak a few days.

That would be Marvel Mystery Oil. Available at most any auto parts store.

Re: Getting my 1977 GL1000 on the road again!
Just because I could I brought the tank slabs and the side covers in and used some rubbing compound on them. And as that famous Chef would say: "POWW", I uncovered the prettiest grey metallic paint I think I have ever seen! The parts were so dull, I didn't even know that it had metellic in it!:
Made my day! Can't wait to get the fairing and center tank piece polished! I got lucky! Diamond in the rough!
The pictures do not do the paint justice!
I will not be putting the ugly black/gold Honda tank emblem back on!
