GRRRR! OK, deep breath...

I've been ordering a variety of parts over the past week, and right now I'm kind of in a quandary. I ordered a water pump sealing kit from an ebay seller who specifically listed it as a K&L kit. However, it is manufactured by KP Gasket instead. Talking to another seller earlier in the week, I was told the K&L brand kit was on backorder, and could be out for a month or more. I've got plenty of things to work on, but do I go through the hassle of returning this kit and searching specifically for a K&L, which might not be available, or just go with the kit I have? GRRRR!

That is a risky call. that front cover gasket has to be a certain thickness or when you tighten it down it will jam up the shifter linkage.

Yes, I remember reading about that. There are numerous listings for that KP kit on ebay, but very few of the K&L, and then I'd be messaging each seller to verify that...

This past winter I got a waterpump gasket kit from George Fix on Ebay. He shipped me a KP kit and I had no problems with it. The part number on the kit was 15-4340.

@scootsx2: Thanks for the input. KP uses the same part number for their kit as K&L. It's just the fact that it's an unknown to me, combined with the misrepresentation (Intentional or not) on the listing. I will probably keep the kit and just order an OEM cover gasket.

Not sure why they can't describe items accurately. Some are great to work with and others just don't have a clue... fly into a rage

I think some just think a kit is a kit is a kit..... that there is no difference.

These motors are very sensitive to gasket quality. You can get away with the cheap stuff in some area's but it's really not worth taking a chance on when you have to tear down the bike to change a defective gasket.

I came from the world of Chinese scooters where most things are interchangeable and very generic. Where "good enough" was high quality.. LOL It was surprising but most of it actually worked and worked well.

I contacted the seller the same day I received the package (Saturday). I realize that a business may not be open on weekends, so I didn't expect a response until some time on Monday. Monday came and went. Tuesday for sure, right? Nope. I initiated a return through ebay Tuesday afternoon after no response. Today (Thursday) I finally get a response from the seller, "Can you please provide us with a photo of what you had received? Also, there is a part number on the manufacturer's packaging, can you please provide that part number to us?" GRRRR! Why do I have to jump through hoops...

Might be a little late on this post, but I just saw it. We've got a bit of a cheat sheet we use when we have a water pump replacement to be done. We do order genuine Honda parts because we have had some of the others fail due to slight differences in the "o" ring sizes. If it helps - Yay, if not needed maybe someone else might use it later:

The following list of item numbers from any Honda Parts Sales online will get you all that you need:
Go to a source: (such as, but not limited to Partzilla, Bike Bandit, etc.) and click on the 1976 GL1000. Click onto the Transmission Cover.

Choose one each of the following item numbers: 2,3,5,12,18,19,20,21,23,24 and 30. Then choose three of item 17 and 2 of item 22 and place them in your shopping cart.

Back to Cylinder Block and choose one each of item 55. Place in cart.

Back to Oil Pump and choose one each item 23 and 27, then two each of item 26. Place in cart.

We very highly recommend that you always use Honda o-rings for the water pump body and rear ring, items 24 and 20 in the Transmission cover. We have also included in this list an oil filter item 5 and if you have lost the filter bolt spring washer, you should include item #6.

Thanks for the list, Moose! I happened on a 'set' made up of all Honda parts on ebay. I'll have to go through and check all the numbers...
