81 cafe scrambler

Post by johnnyfever »

Took her out today for the first time this year. I'm going to shave the seat a bit more on the back, but I welcome any suggestions on doing more. It can never be done right?

I had street tires, but I'm out in the boonies a bit and the gravel doesn't do well with smooth tires. Since I've put the lugs on it is glued to the road, rides smooth, no issues. Won't be going back for sure.

A BMW GS1200 weighs more than a naked wing and the BM's are regularly driven two up, fully loaded, at high speeds and long distances (at least here in South Africa). There are suitable knobbly tyres that can take this kind of abuse, you just have to find them.

A Continental TKC 80 is a great off road tyre but has a reputation for not being that great on wet tar and they wear out pretty quickly. Continental have recently introduced the TKC70, a more 50/50 road/dirt tyre. Could be a nice compromise for a Goldwing.

In SA we have the Heidenau and Mita tyres available, both European brands, that have been embraced by the dual sport community. Great tyres, and a range from full off-road to road biases.

Johnnyfever, I love your build, it just looks like a great go anywhere ready for an adventure type of bike. My kind of bike!

Suggestions? I agree about shaving the seat down a bit. Maybe add some fork gaiters. But most importantly post some more pictures. NOW!!!!!!!!!!

Lovely bike and I love the knobbies. On my next wing I would try to get Knobbies as well, just to get on the gravel roads where others cant go and explore our lovely country. No offroad riding.

Nice looking bike there Johnnyfever. I would like to do a similar build. Where you hiding the rear blinkers?

Great looking bike. An "upgrade" that may look good on your ride would be to drill the front rotors.

The rear tailight has blinkers and brakelight/running light in the same housing. Ebay, pretty cheap. Al lights are led except headlight.

Johnnyfever that is one hot bike you have there!!
I agree fully with the fork gaiters & headlight grill - on that subject I'd recomend a smaller, all black headlight...

Hello johnnyfever,

you build a great bike.... i like it. The shape of the bike and the coloring made a modern looking bike instead an old fashioned wing....
... oh I love old fashioned bikes....

Wish you many happy miles with your wing
