Any Opinions??
How would you attempt to mount this back rest?
I know it's not set up to go on this part of the seat but I'm thinking of trying my hand at fabricating it to fit. How would you guys go about it! It's actually off a old 77 that I had but no longer have the luggage rack it went to.

Re: Any Opinions??
Gotta be something that comes up from the shock bolts and or fender bolts, I had a drag specialties aluminum rear rack that I could imaging would have been good for this, it had wide sides that could allow drilling and bolting on different things.
I would look at rear racks you could cut to make side brackets of some sort, aluminum preferred cause it`s easier to work with, bend and just polish the cut edges when your done.
You would necessarily need to mount the whole rack but just cut what you need off.

I think you'll need to mount it to both the shock and fender mounts for strength. That is from my dressed '78. It's had the section zman mentions cut off, but it's worked fine for many years.
I don't think I have any left, but there's got to be many unused ones laying around.

Re: Any Opinions??
you would not want it chafing on the seatcover.
You would want to fabricate a completely different frame for it
one that holds the pad in the right place but does not touch the seat.

Re: Any Opinions??
Don't know your fabrication skills or what tools you have available so here are a couple of ideas, i.e. how I would mount it.
(1). If you aren't trying to make the sissy bar "adjustable", I would remove the pad from the bar and make my own. With the bar descending further down the seat. If you have limited tools, use 3/4" thick walled copper plumbing pipe, with an added brace at the bottom of the bar where the pad mounts. Home Depot has a tube bending tool for less than $20.
(2). If you want an adjustable sissy bar, you will need a tube in which the sissy bar will slide in and out of. Holes drilled in various points along the tube will give a number of spots. A single hole drilled in the sissy bar, held in the drilled holes in the tube by a bolt and reusable cotter pin, or if you want to get fancy, tap the sissy bar and use a knurled knob to hold it.
In either case, you will need to fabricate brackets mounted at the top shock bolt and seat bolt to hold the sissy bar or tube which it slides in. Or you can use brute strength and widen the sissy bar so it won't ruin the seat and mount with brackets. Depends on how elegant you want to be.

Re: Any Opinions??
You noted you once had the original base. I also did, I since have passed the whole setup onto another NGW member. IIRC it mounted on the top shock mount and then the frame mount, just like the original rear grab handle. It had a slide system so you could slide the back rest portion forward, to the position shown in your photo, or back to become a backrest for a passenger. Again IIIRC it was friction stop in the frame mounted section that set the position of the back rest. I will look for some pictures.

This is what the original mount system looked like for your back rest. Hope it helps a bit.

You can save yourself a lot of aggravation and install one of these to your stock seat. http://www.utpr.com/goldwing.html

Re: Any Opinions??
Exactly the set up I had on my 77. Now just the passenger backrest still lingering in my garage, so I figured why not attempt to make a backrest for my 82..Casper wrote:This is what the original mount system looked like for your back rest. Hope it helps a bit.

Re: Any Opinions??
!st I wouldn't but if you are going to you 1st need to bend the side out and adjust do they will line up with the brackets to hold the bars on each side the brackets you'll have to make form scratch or find a breaker who has an old backrest made for a gl that you can scavenge the parts from. I'd look at backrests made to mount on the gl's and get ideas from them.
