Noisy clatter with clutch out in neutral.

#1

Post by ericheath »

I have a vid of the clatter I hear at idle. I am unsure of where to proceed. Carb sync doesn't change it. Changed the clutch release bearing....no change in behaviour. Sound is tough in vid, but you can clearly hear it quiet down with the clutch pulled. Any thoughts of what this might be are appreciated. I need to check the oil for metallics. None noticed in previous oil changes.

It's not the stator rotor bolt.

Edited video link to make it work...... Sagebrush ;)

No vid. My 76 has a noise with it running in neutral. Pull in the clutch and the noise goes away. I think your noise is normal.

Have you checked your idle drop to see if in fact all 4 are firing at idle? Most likely what you are hearing is chain slap from an uneven idle. An IR reader on the headers would tell a lot also

I resynched tonight. They were a little off, but it still makes noise. The part that I haven't noticed in my other bike is the fact that it quiets down in neutral with the clutch in. Is there a tensioner on the chain from clutch to oil pump? This is a 1200.

The 1000's almost all sound a bit different when the clutch is pulled. Some are quieter than other but it is because they have a smoother idle.

This an 85 1200 with 77 heads and carbs. The noise does disappear with a load on, as in letting the clutch out in gear. I recall something, probably from OldFogey John, about a tensioner for a chain. Just not sure which chain this might be. It sounds like a couple bolts getting tossed around in there. Bugs me, but it's been two years and it gets flogged pretty regularly.

if this is what you are talking/thinking about, doesn't apply to 1200

Glad you found it. I do not know how or why, but the PO cross threaded the stator bolt in my bike. I heard the clatter like you did. Tried to tighten the stator bolt, but it was as tight as it would get. Come to find out, it rubbed against the case, got so hot it welded itself into the shaft. Tore up the case too. After the bolt broke trying to get it out, it took me two days to file it down in the shaft so that I could have a machine shop re-tap it so that I could get a new bolt in it. Along with a new stator and stator case.

I have also concluded it is clutch basket rattle. Posted a vid somewhere else. A good sync helps.

I think I found an answer. That is what it sounds like to me. I'm going to resynch to see if it helps, but I'm going to stop worrying.
