synthetic wheel bearing grease??

#1

Post by salukispeed »

I am preping a new HF small #66771 trailer for behind my Goldwing and read that wheel bearings could be marginal. I pulled the wheels and found that one side was terribly over tightened and the other was pretty good. I decided to remove, clean and regrease the bearings. It has little 480x8 wheels and will spin at a silly rpm at highway speed. I have never found a need to go to Synthetic bearing grease but is this a time to consider such. I usually remove and reseal, clean, regrease every couple years to be safe. Opinions?? I dont want this to turn into a tire/oil thing if at all possible.

If I already had the synthetic I would use it. If I had regular dino wheel bearing grease I would use that. Quality grease is all that matters.

Have you considered bearing buddies? They make it possible to add grease with a grease gun.

Genersl purpose grease will be fine If you keep an eye on things like you say.
If the bearings will ever be submerged like a boat trailer, you may want to consider an upgrade.
Bearing buddies are a good idea but you will still need to do your regular maintainance.
You dont want to just keep adding grease to the point of pushing out a seal.

Agreed. What I'd really like to try though is ceramic bearings but gee whiz they are expensive, they're about $100 each.

Very good for racing. Not sure on the street though. Potholes and hard bumps may not be good for them.

I broke down and added a couple dollars for the Synthetic so I cleaned and repacked and all seems great. But obviously I am an old fart and missed where the trend to include Moly in simple bearing grease became popular. at Autozone 4 of the five cans of grease had moly and only the budget grade was pure dino. . I like Moly for many things but it can have one bad side effect. In high-speed rotating components the moly can separate and migrate to the outside as a thick paste. During routing maintenance We were using some in the chucks in my Fuji machine centers that turn small small parts and at 4000+ rpm it would cake up and stop the chuck from releasing. Always something???
