Honda points

#1

Post by BlueThunder »

I ordered points from Honda and got the Diache Chinese parts. Apparently Honda is now shipping these. I've found these points tend to wear out very fast and the cam heel is smaller making timing more difficult. Toyo and Kousan points are getting hard to find. Does anyone have actual experience with Diache points? What is your experience with them?

Junk. Mike Nixon has a post showing the good from the bad somewhere here.

Last year I found quite a few EBay vendors advertising falsely. Ask questions using Mike's pictures.

At Honda prices and the short life of points, a Dyna is paid for quickly.

If you order the plate assembly I think you still get the good ones. They are not the 450 points with the double strap but I have ahd good luck with them.

Back in the days of old, Napa sold their own line of points, Echlin Gold. These were the best quality available, strong springs, long lasting with a light cleaning now and then. Using these points in anything resulted in a great, noticeable improvement. I had to beg my Napa dealer to special order Echlin motorcycle points for me because he said that he didn't want to compete with his neighbor the Honda dealer. He only gave in after I convinced him that I wouldn't buy the Honda points anyways.

Well that sucks! I have a brand new one I carry as an emergency backup in my saddlebag that is still sealed up.

Is that a Prestolite? If you are getting rid if it let me know. If it works I'll buy it.

I had a guy chase me down on his newly refurbished 77 the other day. He must have figured with my Frankenstein bike, I must know something. Anyways he was having timing issues and the split timing question. I told him to bring it over to my place. He had just bought a new plate/point assembly from Honda and it could not be set up to time the 3-4 side. I moved the points plates twenty times but finally succumbed to the fact that the holes in the 3-4 or left side were not wide enough. He had done all this with a mechanic already. He suggested drilling the holes, so in the vise and a-reamaway, a-reamaway a-reamaway the lion stretched all four holes about 1/8 to 3/16" to allow it to rotate more and it then timed perfectly. About 1/8 before F2 on one side and 1/8 after F2 on the other. He texted me and said it runs like dream now.

To this topic, the points were TEC, which I thought by memory were the bad ones, the points and my memory were bad, but I think TEC stands for Toyodenso Electric Co, the better ones. The plate was the one that was off.
