diode-update

Post by JOLLY »

can someone tell me what the diode under the seat on a 1986 GL 1200A is for. I have one that is bad , but dont know what its for.
I have done so much with so little for so long, I think I could do anything with nothing at all, in no time flat. My best friend Buddy (my service dog) loves to ride as much as I do.!!! I would hope everyone would use a product called (Ride On) sealant & Balancer, in their tires, because it has saved my life.

Ok, I'll give it a shot. To start the bike, it must be in neutral, neutral light is on. But the bike will start in gear with the
clutch pulled. With out this diode, the neutral light would flash every time you pulled in the clutch e.g. shifted.
I think that's it.
Cheers...

If you don't know what it does, how do you know it's bad?

Sometimes diodes can check bad if you try to check them in "situ" or plugged in. Did you remove at least one wire and perform the diode check? (assuming a 2 wire diode) If more than two wires it could be a bridge rectifier in which case the test procedure is different.

YES I REMOVED IT TO CHECK IT. I have anther 1986 GL 1200A and it checks out good. there was another post that said something about the neutral switch that just came to mind. I didnt check to see if it would start wile in gear and the clutch is not engaged. I will test that tomorrow. I do thank you all for your posts.

DIODE UPDATE

#8

Post by JOLLY »

THIS IS WHAT I HAVE FOUND OUT about THE DIODE UNDER THE SEAT; it keeps the engine from starting when its in gear, unless the clutch is engaged. I am learning slowly, but getting there. THANKS EVERYONE KEVIN.
