Tired of powder coating quotes...

#1

Post by mhynze »

Haven't been around for a bit, lots going on and family health issues, anyways.... Well it was gonna get pricey with how much stuff i want to powder coat..... I haven't been working on any of my wings lately, just 3 of my CB's, But i did have time to test my new creation. I'm happy with the results, and it was designed so it could easily do 4 rims or a motorcycle frame

Did you rip open a stove and take out a burner to make that?

Exactly what I did, this was all re purposed sheet metal too from a wall that was ripped out of a ship awhile ago.

I used everything from the stove, The 2 elements, although its still only wired to use 1 at a time, the 2 big burners are also in there to assist in the preheat, I crank them to max until it hits temp, then turn them off and leave it the oven element

The light from the stove was moved to the top of the new stove and wires extended, along with most burner/element wires extended, the control unit just hangs on the side

ovens thermostat is in the top of the new oven and i used the fiberglass insulation too, and just kept all the sheet metal from the stove for later projects

What is the sealant used at the sheet metal seams? It looks like wood stove adhesive/sealant. I've collected all of the tools, kitchen oven, toaster oven, sandblast cabinet, but haven't done a part yet. Right now my oil-less compressor cylinder needs rebuilt. I know I'm gonna want a bigger oven when I get started. I've been looking at metal studs, sheet metal, insulation and wood stove adhesive, old electric stoves are free everywhere, could have had 5 or 6 by now. Wood stove gasket rope would work well for sealing a door. I really hate the sandblasting part but the rest looks like fun.

Yes its stove gasket in a caulking tube I used you could probably get away without if you use rivets but i didnt have an air riveter so just used pan head screws, the only thing i put rivets on were the doors hinges to steel stud

I tried to be cheap and seal the door with copper pipe insulation...copper pipes get hot...well they dont get that hot, cause the top half melted away

the top half is the the only part leaking hot air, it still gets up to temp, but obviously not as efficient, I will likely buy the stove fiberglass rope and use it on the top half only and see how that goes

Powder coated one of my spoked rims and it turned out great

I will now move on to my 80-82 com stars, I will be doing 2 tone on them, my first attempt at 2 colours

Heck yeah, keep this thread going and show us some more pictures. What did you do to keep the PC out of the brake drum? I think I'll go to the other extreme with some extra gloss black to start with. Just got the compressor parts ordered, pretty cool rebuilding a compressor for $40 and second time on this one. Good idea using the large burners for a faster preheat.

This was the Matte Black from Harbor freight, I have about 8 colours I ordered from a online store i will be trying soon

for the brake drum, I just used those rags, the powder is not sticky only a slight charge attracts it to the metal (trust me the first time i bumped the rim into the wall), but ive ordered high temp tape and plugs/caps

I did the front spoked rim and the 80-82 com stars, ive always disliked those rims... but now i like them more :)

Spoked is Matte Black

Com star is Matte black and Bronze Chrome, i think i will the brake drum and the drive flange matte black, opinions?

I bought that gasket rope for the door, but my gas heater is a goner since yesterday... think im gonna get a used house furance and put it out in the shop instead now... so i left the rope off for the added heat :flamer

looks like you took the bushings out of the rear wheel. What are you replacing them with?

Yes i did because i had to knock the drive flange off to get the other 2 wheels bearings out, and figured id just pull those out for the bake

This is a 81 cb750 chain drive wheel though, but a guy on the forum says hes left many bushings in for powder coat

I did on my cb500T rear wheel

Wish I had that much experience already. I know what you mean about those Comstars. I have two '81 DOHC 750Cs, both going good and I ride them often, ugliest wheels ever made. I remember Cycle Magazine saying the same thing when they were new.

Mistakes ? Plenty ....

I've probably wasted half the powder... and its not in a place to be reclaimed ( which you can )

Prep is everything... i had both sets of rims sandblasted at a welding shop for $15 each , both i also mucked up with greasy hands of course.... advise against this, the rag i used with acetone actually left fibers all over the rim u couldnt really see until powder went on... the only good thing is, you can just blow the powder off... haha

Next time they will be blasted and kept sterile.... to save lots of time

Not sure what shorting the system actually does... done it a few times spraying too close on high voltage, and it just arcs then continues as normal...

Waiting on high temp tape and high temp plugs & caps to make masking easier , ive only used painters tape , which has to be removed before the bake unless you like goo

The next Set of rims I do will be the 83 1100's I've been thinking of copper outer rim and black spokes

I'm up on wiping with acetone. I'm formally trained in auto body work. We used lint free cloths to wipe down and then used a tack rag to get any dust left after wiping. Don't know where to get the cloths but the tack rags are at Walmart or any automotive parts store. Use the tack rag with a real light touch (don't push too hard) or it will leave its own stickiness on the part. One tack rag can last a long time if kept free of grease, store it in a zip-lock bag. In the body shop we would ground the car frame before wiping down and while painting to kill the static cling, don't think this is possible with the PC because it needs the static cling. It wouldn't hurt to ground the part just before wiping down. I have an antenna tower just outside my workshop that I could hook a wire to.

How are you judging time in the oven? 400* for 20 min.? Do you have a window on the oven? I don't know if a window is necessary or not.
