Progressive Springs 11-1102 (1980 GL1100)

#1

Post by kermit »

I went and pulled the spring out of the forks on my 1980 Gl100 and I had ordered Progressive PN 11-1102 springs for it which are two inches shorter. I then checked the chart that came with the springs and it did not list any spacers. I then checked on this site to see who else has had this issue and only one came up however there was no ending to the posting. If you do not have any spacer then the bike is going to sit two inches lower which makes no sense so I think that a spacer is required however then as was pointed out in the post you would lose the two inches of travel...so I am now at a loss as to how to proceed. I am temped to cut a two inch spacer from the small spring and put in the small washer that was in before however the spring would not have the landing area that it was built with....

Has anyone used these springs and had this issue before...Thanks

Sure you were shipped the right springs..if I recall correctly most putting in progressives had to work hard to get the caps screwed down..maybe you order the right item number and were shipped something else..but a stack of washers works to provide spacers; some have used PVC pipe cut to right lenght or steel pipe. cutting old springs not a good option.

Yeah, first I'd verify you did get the correct springs. A solid spacer would work but that makes for a stiffer ride. A valve spring on top would be "better". Or the original short spring.

Odds are either they sent you the wrong springs or somebody changed out the forks sometime during it's life. Either way I would not proceed until I figure it out.

Wow ...I hate getting old...the spring does not need a spacer and when properly installed sits where it should....the old springs need to stick out further due to their lighter build..,..I am now going to have a nap...is there any medicine for senility...somebody said that at 50 I would start to lose it...seven years now past and I know that I have...sorry for the stupid old guy post!!

It happens. I often walk away from things and take a break when the obvious does not make sense to me.

Yup, and as soon as you walk back it hits you right in the face.

Yesterday, had a guy call with a 900 Kawasaki that I had sold him. Non running bike that came with new Dyna coils in the box. I also sold him a good working used Dyna-S ignition. He calls, says it wants to fire but won't. I asked him all the right questions. Including "Are you sure the rotor is installed correctly?". Answer was yes. Told him I'd come over and check it out. He is about 15 miles away. I get there, tell him to pull the plugs. I start turning the engine over by hand to see where everything was. You guessed it, the rotor was out of phase 180 degrees. Put it on the right way and it fired right up.

He asked what he owed me. I told him nothing, it was a teaching moment. ;) Besides, there is a really good old style root beer stand over there. I grabbed some Spanish dogs and a gallon of root beer and took it home for the wife and I for supper. dancr
