Always trying new things.. Motogadget M-Unit
It started out, simple enough. My LED flashers were not flashing, even with an electronic flasher unit. I deduced, with the help of Hamster, that there was a bad ground or something somewhere.
Now keep in mind, I never intended for No Quarter to be much more than a quick project. As time went on, I scabbed this light on, that horn on, etc etc. Pretty soon the wiring looked like one of those previous owner jobs. I didn't mind, it was reliable and hidden under the seat, and shelter, and side panels and and...
So when I started looking for my turn signal wiring issue, I had to undo some wiring. Which lead to undo more wiring, which lead to.. well you know. The picture below pretty much sums it up. When I took the picture, I STILL had not found the exact problem, but I did deduce that some how one of the wires going to the flasher was wrong. Problem is, I don't remeber ever changing that wire, and the flashers worked fine until one day..
Looking at this rats nest, I was determined to rewrap and reroute and clean everything up. And then.. the M-unit crossed my path. The solution to all that plastic wrapped copper... but it was expensive. Kinda like stupid expensive. I kept trying to justify buying the unit, together with the M-button, and the M-switches. I just could not bring myself to pull the trigger.. until..
I'm sitting at my computer, looking at the m-unit instructions for the 20th time, and, for the 20th time, trying to talk myself into it, when the phone rings. It's a guy from Seattle who I built a greenhouse for. He wants his shelving hung, as he can't deal with it. A 20 minute job, with 5 hours of round trip driving. Not something I really jump at. So I tell him, I am going to charge for a full days labor to do the work. He asks "how much?" I look at my screen, and right there in front of me, on the computer screen, is the price for the M-Unit, button and switches. I tell him a price that is the same as the M-unit. He says "OK - when can you get here?"
Needless to say,the unit, button and switches are on their way. I will be following up on this thread with pictures and such. Stay tuned.

I haven't started putting mine on yet, but I do believe it will ease the wiring woes that can plague these old girls.
That M-button is certainly a marvel!

the fine folks at Revival use and speak highly of the M-Unit.
Looks like THE fix for complete builds. Take many photos of your install.

Thought seriously of one myself. Someone here in San Antonio had one for sale (unused) cheap but wouldn't talk of mailing it even though I would prepay. 140 miles round trip just seemed too far, but still----

Re: Always trying new things.. Motogadget M-Unit
As usual, these projects turn into careers. What started as a chase to figure out why my blinkers were not blinking turned into a full rewire and more.
I removed the skins and seat and battery, then began "unwiring". I saved as much of the original wire so if I need to make new runs, I can color match thee wires to the original Honda wiring scheme.
Here are a couple snaps of the wiring as it existed.
As promised, a pile of cut off electrical tape.
Parts have started to roll in, the M-unit, M-button, (1) 2 switch m-switch, (1) 3 switch m-switch, and a lithium battery.
I removed the original battery box and cut the battery retaining lever off.
Next I cut a component mounting plate out of thick aluminum, polished it, and riveted it into place.
I played with the mounting configuration of the electrical units until I liked them. Then drilled holes, as well as added a battery strap.
Here is everything in place. Note the fused distribution box. This will be used to route power to ancillary devices (Fuel Pump, Horn relay, fan, Driving light relay, ignition system).
More to come... I have removed the handlebar controls and drilled the bars for wiring the new m-switches.

Re: Always trying new things.. Motogadget M-Unit
I also ordered a keyless remote to install while I'm at it. I'll send up a flare when I emerge from the shop someday.. just shoot me. I also grabbed a new throttle since the old controls will no longer be needed. Combined with the new throttle cable Irish fabbed for me, it should smooth as glass now.

Re: Always trying new things.. Motogadget M-Unit
Been following your thread. Great project. Always something to do on these older bikes. Just installed a side stand interlock/indicator light circuit on my '85 Limited Edition.
Question - the keyless remote - what is the make, model and where did you get it from? This sounds like a good project.
Cheers

Re: Always trying new things.. Motogadget M-Unit
Hey Ernest, The M-unit uses a simple on off circuit that is typically routed through the ignition key. I simply bought a remote control 12V switch. It was like 15 bucks.

Ernest, Motogadget also makes the M-lock wireless key. Pricy, but pretty cool!

Re: Always trying new things.. Motogadget M-Unit
I've read this thread twice, but I'm still a little confused. (Confusion most likely caused by the mixture of cold meds, anti-biotics, etc...)
However, could someone please explain in a sentence or two why this M-Unit is great?
Thank you.
