timing belts
Ok guys, I am changing timing belts on my GL 1000. As careful as I could be (yeah right) I tried to keep timing marks aligned. I cannot move the right side cam gear (cylinders 1 and 3) I believe the valves are hitting the pistons. How do I correct the problem? I have viewed You Tube and these forums. I don't believe I have hurt anything.

Re: timing belts
How are you trying to move them and which direction? If really unsure, loosen all the valve adjusters (loosen the nut, unscrew the adjusters) it should go then. Be careful, turn by hand. Pulling spark plugs makes it much easier too.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: timing belts
By following the videos and forum information C/W. Yes the plugs are still in, maybe I am just high on the compression stroke.

Re: timing belts
yea pull the plugs. Compression will build as you rotate it but valve to piston will stop it immediately with no give. Odds are very high unless you forced things that you did no damage.

Re: timing belts
Remove all of the spark plugs.
I don't know if you are aware but when the crank is at TDC (Top Dead Center) and the cams are set close to the timing mark the right side cam is trying to lift a valve so there is a lot of resistance to turning, from one of the valve springs, to get the cam onto it's timing mark.
Just to be safe you can loosen all of the valve lash adjusters and turn the crank 90 degrees either clockwise or counter clockwise. That will move all 4 pistons down away from the valves. At that point you should be able to turn both cams in full rotations without hitting something hard. Put the cams on their timing marks and then return the crank to TDC and align the left side cam then the right side cam and put the belts on. Keep in mind on the left side there is no resistance to turning the cam but on the right side you will be pushing a cam lobe onto a valve and there will be spring pressure trying to move the cam off of the timing mark on that side.
When you have the belts on and in time you should be able to turn the crank 2 full turns and recheck your timing marks. Keep in mind that the crank shaft spins two full turns for every turn of the cams.

Re: timing belts
Forgot to mention that when adjusting the timing mark on the right side cam you will have to leave your wrench on the cam nut and tie it in place to keep it aligned with the timing mark. Some use mechanics wire or large zip ties to hold the wrench.
