Martek Ignition help

#1

Post by TBM »

I'm just resurrecting a GL1000 and just wanted to check a couple of things.

I currently have new Dyna Coils and a Martek Ignition System that came with the bike and is untested.

I've had to create a new loom from scratch, although have used correct colour wires to make life a bit easier for me. I think I've got the Ignition wiring right based in other threads in here.

a) RH Coil - HT leads to cylinders 1 and 2. Black/White wire from switched +ve to one side of the coil, Yellow wire to other side of the coil.
b) LH Coil - HT leads to cylinders 3 and 4. Black/White wire from switched +ve to one side of the coil, Blue/Yellow wire to other side of the coil.
C) Martek - Black to switched +ve, Green to Earth, Yellow to Yellow RH Coil, Red to Blue/Yellow LH Coil.

Firstly, could anyone confirm/deny that this is right?

Secondly, any tips on how to sort out the timing? i understand that I'm able to do static timing, but not something I've attempted before.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Thank you - I scoured the site for all the Martek posts, but can't seem to find any instructions about how to specifically static time the Martek (it's most probably obvious but I've never done it before!). The first link gives the instructions for setting up a 400, and has timing marks on the back plate and one less wire to the GL set up.

I'm assuming I can set up in a similar manner to the dyna S: https://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=5720

My thoughts are connect test bulb from yellow wire to earth, and set up with F1 mark, and then red wire for F2 mark. I don't think I can do split timing with the Martek so is it just 'best fit' between the two?

Yes you can follow the same basic procedure as the Dyna. For the split timing it seems to be masked more with the hall effect systems than the points but it is still there. I would certainly look for it while doing the timing and if it is noticeable then address it.
