100% New Guy

Post by Perfikt »

Hey, just thought I'd say hi!

Just bought an '81 GL1100, my first bike, as a non-running project. Not entirely sure what's wrong with it yet, (aside from the engine not turning over, I have ATF sitting in the heads right now), but I feel like this forum will be an invaluable resource.

Going to run through all the sticky threads and whatnot, see what I need to do, but looks like a good community.. I look forward to be a (hopefully running) part of it!

So yeah, hi, I'm Nick, and I'm from Langley, BC.

Here's the bike in the truck..

And then with the seat off, because winter project means jack all when you bring something new home..

Thanks for all the welcome!

The guy I got the bike from bought it frozen, and never had the time to check it out. He was under the impression that it was just from sitting though, so here's hoping!

I'll check out that Straight Wings, might be good for me, as there's currently a couple pieces missing.

Better check for hydrolock immediately, before you do anything else. If that bike has been sitting for a period of time, it is possible that the crankcase is full of gas. Bad things happen if a hot battery turns the starter on a hydrolocked engine! Check it before you go any further................

The tank is bone dry and the carbs were already off, is this still a likely scenario? Also, I don't currently have a battery, so I was just trying to roll it over in high gear with the plugs out. Am I still going to cause problems?

Not yet, like I said I'm brand new to this so I'm trying to take it slow. I'm hoping to get a couple minutes to check them tonight.

Are you thinking maybe it just jumped timing and I'm mashing all the internals together? As far as I know, it was running prior to previous previous owner removing carbs.
