front oil seal leek.

77 GL1000, I have been trying to get this bike back on the road for a friend. I have got it running now but it has a leek from the front crank seal. Can anyone tell me what is involved in replacing this seal and where would be the best place to get the seal? Thanks Dannie

I have seen several that appeared to have blown crank seals, when in fact it was blown fork seals that oiled down the motor.

Thanks for the ideas, but oil is coming from crank seal. No trouble with water pump and for sure not fork seals, have not even rode it yet.

Here's one listing from a reputable company. It does not say it is a genuine OEM seal, however. If you Google the part number you will also find listings on Ebay, Amazon, etc. You can also try local sources with the size: 35x55x8 (mm).
R&R of the seal is straight forward. It's best to rotate the engine to #1 TDC as if you were changing the belts, so you don't have to worry about it later. Remove the belt covers, belts, and crank belt pulleys. Screw a few short drywall screws into the old seal far enough that they 'grip' then use them to pry out the seal. Be careful not to nick the crank.
Inspect the crank for wear. It is possible for the seal to wear a groove into the crank.
Install the new seal by driving it into place squarely. I've used different 'tools' as needed; deep well socket, etc. I've even used a short piece of PVC pipe.
Use an appropriate sealer around the outside of the seal, such as Yamabond or Permatex when installing the new seal.

Another quick thought... you can hold the crank from turning when breaking loose the front bolt by using an old timing belt and a pair of pliers...

To help protect the lip(s) of the replacement seal from damage and rolling under itself when initially installing the seal onto the crankshaft , utilize a lip seal protector.
Us older fellows know of the need for one, and in some cases have utilized outdated microfiche cards for that purpose.

And as TrackT has advised to check for crankshaft damage. ........
If there is undue wear on the crankshaft seal contacting surface, there is a product known as a Speedi-Sleeve.
