Replacement GL1000 left handlebar switches

#1

Post by Chris in TN »

Ever since I bought my ‘76 GL1000 last year the broken hi/lo beam switch on the left grip switch assembly has been an annoyance. I wanted to replace it but the only used switch assemblies I saw on eBay were beat and the only NOS one I found was going for $225. So I started looking at subbing a new reproduction one from a different Honda model since all the Honda switch gear from that era was pretty similar. I found a likely candidate on eBay from Z1 Enterprises intended for a CB750 K2-K6 and supposedly matching Honda part number 35200-374-671. I liked the $42 price too. As it turned out It was identical to the GL1000 one I needed except for two wires being different colours. I ohmed out the wires to positively identify which wires went where and to check the switch functions. I put it in today and besides the usual hassle of dragging wires through the handlebar everything went smoothly and works just fine. I put together a corrected wiring diagram showing which wires were different just in case someone else needs to use one of these too.

Now if I could just find a gas gauge that works!

Pretty sure that both of the handlebar switches on my 1100 came from CB900's, plug and play, no alterations necessary.
