Question about shop manuals

#1

Post by doubleminded »

I have a 78, 82,81. And 86. My only manual is for 84 to 87.but most of the information in a manual is the same is it not. I know one is a gl 1000 and gl1100, and gl 1200. But other than the oddities of the sei the manual should work, right?

No.
There are spec differences for multiple things, valves for one between each model and even in between years of models there are differences.
At minimum get yourself a clymer for the 1000 and 1100(1 book covers both) to go with the 1200 manual you have.

^^^ this, there are substantial differences between years & models. For example the 78-79’s have a lot of differences from the 75-77’s. That’s when they started to transition from hot rods (75-77) to touring oriented (78-79) and each successive model moved more in that direction. I had an 86sei (which Is basically the same as the 85 ltd) are a lot different ! Great bikes imho just not much support from Honda after selling them. You need specific manuals that cover the different year/model.

Get a factory service manual for each bike. There are subtle differences that may come back and bite you in the ass. Besides, they are not that expensive.

If you can't afford paper manuals search online. There are lots of places where you can download the Factory Shop Manuals for free.

Add to differences between 1000, 1100, and 1200 - EVERY year 1000 has slightly different carb specs.
