Hectic couple weeks

#1

Post by Whiskerfish »

We had a couple things scheduled and then the Wife had an accident with her new Jeep. She is fine. She was rear ended 2 years ago by a rollback wrecker and her 2019 Wrangler Unlimited was totaled. I bought her a spanking new 2021 same sparkly granite color she loved just a little more up to date. 2 weeks ago a lady pulled across in front of her and she totaled that jeep! (other driver was ticketed). So one totaled from the back and one from the front and she walked away from both. So I feel she is pretty safe inside the Jeeps. She is still sore from the Airbag but fine otherwise.

Anyway that was Thursday 27 April. Later that day I met with contractors to talk about getting the roof redone on the house and Barn. First est was 22k and change. More on that later....

Friday Morning the 28th we helped one of our very Loved dogs "Joy" Cross over. She has been battling for several years with a seizure disorder and was on many medications for that and then her legs started failing her. It came on quick but in just a few weeks she went from running and playing to requiring help getting up or walking. She was not quite 9 years old. That was hard one because it seemed her mind was still sharp but her body had just given out. She was still giving kisses when I was holding her as she went to sleep for the last time. Yea that hurt deep.

A couple hours after that I met with the insurance adjuster when he determined the Jeep was totaled. So I started looking. I was not prepared financially for another new one so we narrowed our search to basically the same vehicle. 2021 4 door Wrangler. Friday I worked a deal for one with the local dealer.

Was getting ready to go back Saturday and close the deal when I started looking on the carvana carmax etc etc sites. Man you can save a lot of money there. Found what we wanted about a 100 miles away through Carmax at about 5 grand less than the dealer wanted. Had to wait but it got shipped and arrived over the weekend. So Monday 1 May we went and inspected that and made a deal.
This time we went with the bright Red so hopefully she can be seen a little better.

Most of that week was spent closing out loans and dealing with the Insurance claims. We also finalized the roofing contract and got set for that.

Tuesday this week (9 May) the work on the Roof(s) started, actually there was a storm risk Tuesday evening so they started on the barn/ Shop. For those that have not been here my shop is a rather large building that looks a lot like a barn. The building to the right of the house with all the bare plywood showing.

The house is Large and the barn is as well. They delivered 144 bundles of Shingles!

The garage went rather well but once work started on the house things kind of went sideways. The house was built in 1890. so obviously construction materials and techniques were different back then. The roof sheeting was 1 x 10's spaced about an inch apart. Quite a bit was damaged and would not hold nails effectively. Most of the gables/ chicken walks never had even that. They were just closed off with cedar shingles and over the years covered the cedar shingles with asphalt shingles. So that did not fly by today's standards. I could have saved a bunch of money just covering stuff up but nobody would honor any kind of warranty.

4 Guys worked 7 am till 8 pm 4 days and finally finished up last night at dark. 18 sheets of 3/4 inch plywood for patches and repairs and a whole lot of work and she is done. action1 action1 action1 action1 action1

Big week indeed. Glad you got it sorted out and Wifee is OK. Hate it when you lose a pup.
A roof job always seems to have hidden challenges. (But) Don’t you feel better when its been done right?..

I knew the roof was going to be a ordeal but did not realize it was quite that bad. I have known it needed doing since I bought this place in 05 and I am very glad it is done. I can not imagine having tackled this job myself. Maybe 20 years ago but just no way now. Nothing but praise for the guys that did the work. Supposed to be cloudy today so after dog walks will spend a good part of the day cleaning up the mess in my attic.

Good to hear the wife is okay and in good health. Good score on Carmax. Nice looking property.

Sorry to hear about your hound, Steve. I know how much your dogs mean to you.

Rough luck with the Jeeps but glad Rusty is ok. I like the red.

House repairs can be a nightmare. My father's family was in the building trade. For major jobs like yours, my grandad's rule of thumb to the owner was: Take your estimate for time, double it. Take your estimate for cost; mutiply by 4
