Hi Guys, Just starting my 4th Wing build (a 1984 GL1200) and I want to change the dummy tank to a conventional tank. This will give me loads of unseat space for a new Motogadget electrics setup.
Does anyone have any experience in a tank swap? As always, any info or advice is greatly appreciated.

Two tanks that are wide enough to fit over the Goldwing frame without many alterations are the Kawasaki Mean Streak 2000ish to 2005 (I think) and a Valkyrie tank.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I managed to get a Vulcan 1500 Classic to fit (circa 1996 I think)

Note that if you leave the tank under the seat you can mount the electrical stuff in the shelter like Honda did without raising the bike's centre of gravity (most of the 'Wing's low CofG is because of the engine but the low mounted tank helps).

I think using the above mentioned tanks will require a different air box. Mine did, but that might have been because it was a 1200 motor in a 77 frame with 77 carbs. 1200 carbs needed alterations too.
I removed some electrical and moved the fuse box up into the area near the coils. Making the tank able to be lifted/ tilted to the rear allowed access. However a full tank would seep fuel through the cap when lifted.
A better location might be be behind the side overs. I put my regulator/rectifier there. I removed the stock tank. Having both tanks has its benefits, but usable space gets tight without the false tank cover areas.
