CB450 Carb Button

#1

Post by cfairweather »

Recently, a man contacted me about restoring his CB450 carb cap because the buttons were in bad shape. I decided to buy a CB450 carb off eBay and examine the button to see if it is similar to the GL1000 button. I discovered the CB450 caps are almost identical to the GL1000, but the buttons are different. A GL1000 slide will go into a CB450 cap just fine, but there are differences. The rounded top of the button on the CB450 is obvious and the concave underside of the CB450 is about 1mm less deep as compared to the GL1000. Another difference is the bottom edge on the CB450. It does not have that tiny ridge which Honda added to improve the seal. Anyway, I am going to attempt to make a button and see how it goes.

I designed the mold and created it last night. This morning, I injected one button and here it is:

After installing the cap, I decided to make the top a bit rounder to make it look like the original. I also made the concave hole about .20mm less deep. The reason is I measured the depth of the slide hole before I removed the original and after I installed this one, the measurement was slightly deeper. I am making a new mold now.

I think I will just offer the CB450 buttons as a service. This will prevent them from copying them :). I am optimistic and I think this will work out over time.
