Bear’s Cycle & Restoration

#1

Post by mossquire »

I havent posted anything regarding my problem with the above company whilst I was still trying to give Bear every chance to do the right thing. However other than a court case I believe I have exhausted all avenues now with the result that Randakks have removed him from their list of Recommended Carb Rebuilders.

I suppose the bulk of the message to forum users is as above and I urge people not to use the company and Randakks have agreed but should you be interested in the story its below.

I have a serious complaint regarding Bear Cycles, one of your 'approved' carburettor restoration partners. I, my brother and my restorer have all contacted him regarding the complete mess he made restoring my carbs. over a year on and I am now having to pay the restorer to completely strip, clean, restore and replace worn and damaged parts from a set of GL1000 carbs that were sent to him. I did my research via both the Goldwing sites and they all said your carb kit was the best. I went onto your site and saw the recommended installers for your kit. Approved and trained by yourselves it said. Unfortunately, Pistol Pete had passed so I chose Bear. I am in the UK but the bike is at my brother’s house in Boston Mass. I bought it with the plan to come over and do road trips with my brother. It needed restoration so it went to a highly recommended restorer in Mass. I stupidly said he could do all the work other than the carbs which should go to Bear. They were sent but when they came back, they had been trashed. Two float posts were broken, they stank of old fuel and had clearly never seen a cleaning tank. We contacted Bear who claimed he was moving premises and had given the job to an employee to do and it was their fault, this seemed strange as half way through the job Bear emailed us to explain he believed the shafts were from a different set of similar Honda GL1000 carbs. He apologised and said send them back and he would do them personally and he would replace the two carb bodies damaged in the last attempt. We ended up paying postage which is not cheap. The set came back days before I arrived to do a two-week road trip. The restorer fitted them but the linkage had been damaged and it would not run at all on the rear nearside carb. They had to be removed and checked. It was due to something in the carb being fitted upside down which stopped the float from dropping and any fuel from entering the float bowl. I had to cancel the road trip, costing 100s of dollars/£, doing a few days on a borrowed bike, Bear was contacted but he was not interested at all in doing any remedial work or any recompense. After that the restorer explained that he was not going to fit the carbs as he had done a lot of work on the bike and he was not prepared to fit a set of carbs that he was not confident about and is telling me the carbs will need a full clean as they are filthy and another full carb kit. So it now appears that after paying over $600 for Bear to 'restore' my carbs, I am going to pay it again to have a professional to do the job properly. I am coming back at the end of August to do the road trip again. Is this the sort of customer service you expect or approve? I can’t see that you would want your reputation associated with this. I have all the emails and pictures of the abysmal attempt by Bear who has been anything but customer friendly which is why I am coming to you. I am literally hundreds of dollars out of pocket.

Good Lord, that's terrible! Twisted wire to repair a float post? No cleaning whatsoever. I think legal action should be on the cards!!

Sending you a PM

wow..that is horrible..thanks for sharing.
I'd never worked on bike carbs before I got my 76 wing..living in the Maritimes there isn't any goldwing guru's that I'm aware of.
so I bought Randakk's kit and his dvd and did mine myself.
I watched the entire dvd first, then took my laptop out to the garage and followed it to a T in the stripping, cleaning and assembling process.
The bike fired right up after I installed them.
float bowl before and after.

Once in a while I like to help people like you, so if you send me your carbs and pay the return shipping, I will fix them for you. I am not an approved Randakk rebuilder, but I know what I am doing. They will work like new when I am done. I won't be using the expensive Randakks kit, unless you pay for it, but the o-rings and seals I use will work like the originals. Send me a PM if you want me to rescue you :). The shipping typically costs about $60.00 for a set of carbs so it will cost you about $120.00 (total shipping) to get them fixed. Cedric

I am always amazed at how these companies can stay in business. You know that this level of work is done with his other "customers". Thanks for letting us know. He now joins the ranks of Sabre.

For what it's worth, Plus 1 on cfairweather's work, he knows his stuff. A+! He did some carb caps for my '78 that were Outstanding! ( I see I'm a little late to the party here, but my comment still stands).

Randakk ?
I know that he used to sell goldwing parts, but so what, lots of people sell goldwing parts.
Exactly what is it that makes him so special, and why is his blessing such a big deal to you guys?

Randakk was indeed a good carb rebuilder -until he retired years ago and sold his parts business to Z1 Enterprises. They still sell good kits. The difference primarily being more completeness (altough they don't sell the float valve and still recommend the Honda originals), and that the o-rings are Viton. Some people believe that Viton is superior. It is more expensive, but has a tendency to "take a set" more that Buna. Viton's primary advantage is heat resistance, but our carbs don't operate near the 250F upper limit of Buna-N (nitrile).

In the early years his Carb kits were FAR superior to anything else offered. There were a limited number of product failures over the years and he made right by those without hesitation. From the beginning his web site shared what many considered insider secrets about Goldwing carburetors and the rebuilding process. Much of that information is considered common knowledge now. Where other Carb Guru's were only interested in you sending them your carbs he would help you without a huge check. He specialized in the GL1000 and was very responsive to calls for assistance. He poured Thousands of Dollars (close to 20 over the years) into NGW to cover operating expenses. His Customer Appreciation rallys also held ignition, carburation, and riding clinics where he shared more knowledge.

It goes on and on. In the end there are thousands of old Wings on the road today due to his business. So yes he is held in high regard by many of us.

Well said!!

As well as all the carb info, his website had a ton of info on other aspects of the four cylinder Wings. Finding that info is somewhat more problematic on the current Randakk site but it is still there, though it will drive you nuts trying to find any one particular thing.
To truly understand the impact, you would need to time travel back to the mid-2000s when there was very little offered by anyone else for these bikes.

I agree. He is/was more then just a carb guy. And a great assest to the Goldwing community. If anyone deserves respect in the goldwing community, it is Randakk
