1977 GL1000... back on 2 wheels again

Post by what huh »

Hi Friends,

I picked up this 77 off of eBay for a song. When I went to pick up this bike the Seller had several GLs along with a couple of BSAs that came from the same guy. All of them done up nicely but had been sitting for a long time.

Just from the picture I could see a lot of upgrades, found even more when I took the carbs off to get rebuilt today. IT ran but not well at all, needed constant choke adjustments and throttle just to idle.... rough lol.

Oddly enough the carbs are stamped 755a which I think means they belong to a '75. The carbs also have allen head bolts on them thus telling me they have been apart before. Hopfully when they get back and reinstalled she starts up and purrrrrrrrs. Here she is, havent named her yet.

1977 Honda GL1000

Upgrades:
Spin on filter mod
Dyna S points
Dynatec Coils
electric fuel pump
Sportster mufflers
Super Brace on forks
Custom paint
Fairing
cushion grips
Lester Mags, 18" on the back (Thanks Robin1731)
adjustable brake and clutch lever

The air box had GL1000F stamped on it. First I had ever seen the "F" on any Gl stuff

Anybody know why the tach is white? Just a replacement? With all the other stuff going on I am curious if it was done for a reason

My plans are to keep her in stock looking form and ride. probably take off the fairing

Nice. tumb2 Must have been a chart topping song you sang to become this custom GL1000 new owner 😀
Yes, they are 1975 carburetors.
The 2 alloy throttle linkages give them away.
Old Fogey has a technical article on his WINGOVATIONS website about the alloy linkages.

the Air filter housing from my 1975 GL1000.
As far as I know it's the factory installed original part. It has the single stud and wing nut to secure the air filter lid.

Yeah, that's the ticket! :-D
what huh wrote: Sat Aug 19, 2023 7:05 pm Hi Friends,

snip- I took the carbs off to get rebuilt today.

snip- Hopefully when they get back and reinstalled she starts up and purrrrrrrrs.
In the interim...
1-both Timing belts- changed ?
2-next-Valve lash clearances-checked and adjusted, as needed?
3-next-Individual cylinder compression testing performed and each individual cylinder test number results?

Has spark at all 4 spark plugs?

Fuel tank has been examined internally and rust has been eliminated before the carburetors are reinstalled?

After carburetors are re-installed, will you have the equipment available to dynamically engine idle speed synchronize them?

I’m doing the timing belts and ordering parts to do the tensioner mod next month. Would like to get some mid to late fall riding in. Nov/Dec and if the weather is anything like last year then I can ride in January. I like the air crisp! 😂

I’ll check spark if she doesn’t run right. I can examine tank with a camera. If needed I will pull and clean. I’m suspecting this will need to be done cause she sat for awhile.

Vacuum sync? I’ll check that out if she doesn’t run right coming back from rebuild.

Sounds like you have a very good plan in place to get some saddle time in before the snow flies, Charles/Chuck. :-D

And, I found in your total Topics (42) history you have prior experience with couple more GL1000s, too ! tumb2

Thanks GLTriker, all my friends call me Chuck, you included. I’ve done some things as you saw in my history. I often think about the things I would do better/different with the fabrication experience I picked up over the years but I will keep this one stock appearing….. for now :flamer until I get the itch :orange I do have a tendency to not leave stuff alone but my hands are busy with work and a Studebaker project. Really excited about it. The Studebaker not work
